A Level media studies - Subtitles?!

Hey,
For my media research paper I'm looking at why Hollywood re-makes Japanese and Korean horror, one of the main things suggested is that many audiences don't like subtitles.. just wondering what people's thoughts were on the subject and why you think it is people don't want to watch a film with subtitles or if you don't, they why don't you like them??
Also any other thoughts on horror remakes in general would be helpful.

Thanks,

There are a number of people who just can't be bothered to read them....They seem to think that if they keep looking at the text on the screen, they will miss the film! I personally think that those people have a close minded view when it comes to films of another language!
I think that japanese and korean horrors are some of the scariest horrors made in the world, and because they have this effect on fans like myself, Hollywood seems the need to remake them, only they deliver scares differently, catering to what the masses enjoy. I'm not completely against remakes, I have enjoyed a few. it's just that they often don't measure up.

I cannot watch a dubbed movie. It has to be the original language. It makes me feel like I'm not even seeing the real movie. I'm not even hearing the actors' performances. As well, both foreign and indigenous languages are mysterious and beautiful to the ear. They create an atmosphere of estrangement that really works well in a horror or suspense movie. My only issue with subtitles is that the act of reading while watching seems to promote sleepiness a little more. It must be the extra mental effort.
