What is the worst east Asian horror film you have seen?

The worst east Asian horror film I have seen belongs to R-POINT quite boring not in the same league as RING or DUMPLINGS

I hate The Eye, Dark Water, One Missed Call and Nightmare.

EDIT: I didn't care for Memento Mori either, and I can't even get more than halfway through Kairo without falling asleep.

Yeh R-Point was kind of a dissapointment.

I thought Infection was dire.

But i have to disagree with Nickidrea, i really love The Eye (1 and even 2 if you ignore the AWFUL moments) and Dark Water.

I've noticed that almost all of these Asian horror films can be deeply scary and unsettling, but the end always seems to ruin it, which tends to make you feel the film was a bit crap. Like Dark Water, that got (for me) rather freaky toward the end, then there was that lame extra part on the end that just ruined the feel of the film.

reply

How could you hate Dark Water? Great movie, imo.

I really enjoyed Dark Water and I thought The Eye wasn't a bad movie but I though The Suicide Manual was attrocious, emotional? yes, powerful? yes, just not a very good film in my oppinion.

every film has a begining, middle and an end, but not always in that order

reply

ohh there are some Bad ones.. that Thai one there the dead wife comes back from the dead ,And Big Head Monster! But see it anyway !

reply

Aw, I loved the eye lol. And memento mori. Though I agree as a horror film it doesn't quite cut it. But as a kind of erm...supernatural drama it was awesome. Dark water didn't do it for me...but then I think i spoilt it for myself by watching the re-make first. Foolish I know

The river it spoke to me, it told me I'm small

reply

Big Head Monster?! Are you talking about that short called "Sacrifice" with the giant green head at the end?! :O I loved that! It was sooooooo funny! I macroed the screenshots. I couldn't help it. XD

I don't quite remember the subtitle, but it was one of the Guinea Pig movies. It was almost entirely made up of a woman's dismemberment by her captor.

The living dead, and the dying living are cut from the same cloth...

The WORST was "A Frightful School Horror." Utter crap.

I thought "Nang Nak, Art of the Devil (Thailand), Kairo, Cure, Rinne (Japan), Whispering Corridors, Memento Mori, Wishing Stairs, Gawi (Korea) were SOOOOOOO boring...

On that same note, the poster who thought R-Point was the most boring, I disagree... It's all in personal preference whether a movie is a great movie albeit a slow burn, or just too boring.

If I had to pick one of each, let's go Nang Nak, Cure and Wishing Stairs.

Also, Art of the Devil was terrible...but oddly enough, I saw Art of the Devil II before the first one, as it wasn't on Netflix for some reason. It is fascinating to see the subtle differences in the spiritual beliefs in the cultures... great genre, though!

The worst Asian horror I have ever seen is hands down Cursed (Japan) which was utterly terrible in ever way.

I should have known it would suck though since it was about a cursed Shop for christs sake.

Whoever brought up endings that ruin some movies I fully agree with him/her and the biggest culprit of them all IMHO is A Tale of Two Sisters (Korea) which was a superb horror/thriller up until the never ending and confusing plot twists and from that point on it was total garbage.

I am still convinced that the makers of that movie had no idea how to end it and just decided to go with a ridiculous(sp?) mind feck instead.

R-Point and Wishing Stairs were both terrible.

I remember seeing the trailer for R-Point and thinking that it looked brilliant but the film was absolute gash.

Original versions:

The Grudge 1 - Almost comical in its lack of half-decent editing, acting, and lack of storyline. Honestly, the part where whatsherface wakes up and has 17 cats on her bed? It took me twenty minutes to stop laughing.

One Missed Call 2 - Was like an attempt to just get more money, completely screwed up the original plot and explanation, had gaping plot holes everywhere. Liked the new antagonist somewhat, but felt the dialogue to be somewhat bland.

Carved (The Kuchisake-Onna Story) - Was not nearly as good (or as gory) as I'd hoped and expected it to be. Shaky storyline, boring characters, and overall a sort of cheesy feel to it. I love the story of Kuchisake-Onna, but the explanation for it was ridiculous in this movie, and I didn't understand how "Kirei da to omou?" (am I beautiful?) translated to "Aim for the neck!" - I don't speak Japanese, and honestly, it ruined the original fable for me.

Remakes:

One Missed Call - I don't need to see this to know it's going to suck. Seriously. The acting will be about as believable as the Bible would be to an atheist. C'mon. Just, no. I hear they're remaking Tale of Two Sisters, and honestly, that makes me want to cry.

Ring 2 - There is nothing to say. Honestly. I think its true weakness was that they continued the series despite Gore Verbinski leaving. His directing, in my opinion, is what made the original movie. You can tell how much it's fallen apart without him.

Dark Water - Worst remake I've ever seen, ever. I wanted to kill myself, I was bored to tears. At least the original was touching. This version just made me want to puke on my shoes.

...And that should be everything. :P

For those of you who have so far been disappointed, I'd suggest a surprisingly good movie - Premonition. No, not the Sandra Bullock one. The acting is so far beyond perfect I think I could almost be convinced to cry at the sad parts. And I don't cry at movies.
Ever. <3 It's a horror, but with heart.
Other than that, I'd go with Tale of Two Sisters, and Phone (both Korean). I've heard some people criticise harshly the movie Phone, claiming it to be another ripoff of Ring. However, I find it to be completely opposite. It too has a touching storyline (like the two other movies I listed) that makes sense, and it contains a satisfying ending. Plus Moonlight Sonata.

Last but not least would be the Slasher "Bloody Reunion", which while a tad cheesy at times is incredibly touching, particularly at the end. It's a tiny bit confusing, so you may have to watch it twice to understand everything.

...Sorry for the TL;DR. ^-^;

The Ghost Of Mae Nak

Only makes my top ten because I couldn't think of any others. It's annoying and repetitive.
