There is that scene where Sadakos father knocks her down the well and a cartoon hitting sound appears when he hits her. Great film none the less but that was the one instance of unintentional comedy.
Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks? Shaft!
Yes, I almost burst into laughter at that scene, because it should have been horrifying, but then suddenly there is this Bud Spencer/Terrence Hill sound. Hilarious XD
There was also a second scene like this at the end. The one when she manifests herself and crawls out of the TV and stands up. Suddenly a close up of her eye and *CHING* another stupid sound effect XD.
It's a typical Japanese thing, they like sound effects like that. It's one of the things the remake does much better. The remake would actually be the better movie if it would have been the first release of the two. People always tend to rate US remakes lower even if they are superior films.
could be due to the low-ish budget for the film (estd $1.2m). afaik, the japanese film industry also does not seem to have the kind of production values which hollywood has sensitised us to. hollywood horror films, despite their often-terrible scripts / cliched jump scares, do have remarkable sound editing.
that said, this film has one of the scariest soundtracks of any horror film. back in the day, some people even said the music was cursed or something. if you can locate the OST, i recommend a listen... if you dare.
Yeah, but recording a single foley effect with one of the mics they already had would cost only the time, plus any needed materials, depending on the desired sound - if they had wanted not to use the sound they did.

Same here dude, that was actually funny to watch. It just looks so silly how the father just hastily runs behind her and hits her and how she falls into the well.
If you've seen Ju-On: The Grudge, the scene with the grandpa playing peek-a-boo was also unintentional comedy.
