Jonny Lee Miller wasn't right for the role...

....well,at least he didn't do it for me...Edmund Bertram is one of my most favorite characters and somehow Miller didn't fit the bill although he's a good actor and I have no grudge against him.

So - whom would you cast for it? ;-)

Hmmm...someone who's solid, but not gorgeous...maybe, Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman or John Cusack, a younger Sean Bean or a younger Alan Rickman...

reply

Ew no. I do love them all but they're not suited for the part.

reply

Matt Damon, Sean Bean, and Alan Rickman are gorgeous. And I don't think so but wasn't Hugh Jackman just voted People's sexiest man alive?

To each their own, I guess.

JLM didn't work for me either. I would have liked Matthew Macfadyen as Edmund.

But then he's already been Mr Darcy. Actually thinking about it, I can see MM as just about ALL Jane Austen's heroes....

reply

TOTALLY agree about Macfayden

reply

Yes!...he's nice too! :)

I thought he did a fabulous job. I think the ones people listed here would only be chosen by them because they are more well-known. Jonny Lee quietly grew into his character.

in one scene it looked like he'd sucked on a red popsicle before they shot the scene... his lips were so red...

I haven't seen the beginning but I wasn't too excited when I realized Fanny was in love w/Jonny Lee Miller because he doesn't do it for me either. But I thought he did a good job, I loved the little moments they had...but woulda much prefered someone who'd I would be quite smitten with. JLM is kinda forgetable.

yeah, but he wasn't that special either. at least someone special shoulda played him, I thought the other guy, the one who played the guy that tried to marry Fanny was a bit more charming than JLM.

the guy who tried to marry Fanny was meant to be charming..

JLM is a great actor and usually suits these roles well. Im a fan, so he always does it for me. But i felt as if his character was not written well. You know that he and Fanny love each other because its a Jane Austen story and thats whats supposed to happen. The writing itself did little to make me fall in love with him. I liked him simply because thats what your supposed to do.

reply

He did OK, but I prefer Nicholas Farrell in the 1983 version.

reply

I like Miller. He's handsome and he does project likability. Plus, it's nice to see Eli Stone in Mansfield Park. And with his natural British accent!!

I loved the scene where he falls asleep on Fanny's shoulder and his head falls onto her chest. You can sense her desire to kiss him.

The only time Edmund really shone for me was at the very end, when he tells her he loved her. Which i know is the point of his character, that he was hiding his true feelings the whole time. But in Austen films, we're supposed to cheer on the dashing hero (i.e Edmund) but i couldnt help liking Henry more :/
I have nothing against JLM at all but as a previous poster said earlier - he's forgettable. Dan Stevens could've played the part well, i think (good suggestion). In contrast, Alessandro Nivola as Henry is UNforgettable :p

reply

Alessandro Nivola's pure joy at Fanny accepting his marriage proposal is more memorable than anything JLM does in the entire movie.

Not his fault- like you said, Edmund is supposed to repress his feelings.

Really? I thought Miller was perfect for the role! He's not drop dead gorgeous, which Edmund shouldn't be, but he's cute and handsome in a sweet way.
He totally looks like a sweet cousin who would be nice to his poor cousin, and he looks like he could be a clergy man.

reply

I think JLM is a gorgeous man, probably more gorgeous than he should be as Edmund! And the scene when he was conforting Fanny... was just wonderfully done! I love him in the new Emma too!

reply

I was very fond of him as Edmund, he was great in the scene in the carriage when Edmund and Fanny confess they missed each other, and they hold hands. I love that scene.

Although after seeing Emma, I realise he is much better suited to Mr Knightley, loved him! But I am a fan anyway...

reply

I thought JLM was the only actor cast correctly, I didn't like the rest of the cast list in their roles.

reply

I fell in love with him in this movie.
