Philip Jose Farmer

Fans of this series might be interested in one of Philip Jose Farmer's novels, "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg". It postulates an alternative story for Fogg's around-the-world journey, as well as his conections to a secret organization. Farmer is a master of the pulp pastiche and a great fan of adventure literature. He authored two "biographies" of Tarzan and Doc Savage, which encapsulate their stories, while seeking to resolve contradictions and add new layers. In these two books, and subsequent writings, he lays out the Wold Newton Universe. In this world, a meteor strike in Wold Newton, in England, results in the eventual development of extraordinary figures in literature. Present were ancestors of Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, Doc Savage, the Shadow, and many others. It would later inspire other works, like Alan Moore and Kevin o'Neill's 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula" and Diogenes Club stories.
