Brigadoom or Once More, with Feeling?

Brigadoom came before "Once More, with Feeling", I'm sure it even inspired it in part. But which is better?
I choose Brigadoom.

I have a theory, it must be bunnies.
Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes,
They've got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses.
And what's with all the carrots-?
What do they need such good eyesight for anywa - y?
Bunnies, bunnies it must be bunnies!

Brigadoom is great but it can't top that!

Totally agree on the Xena eps... Bitter Suite is by far better than Lyre, Lyre (which I actually think was pretty bad!) and also was (AFAIK) the 'first' of the modern/recent "musical episode" trend... certainly before OMWF (which annoys me when Buffy fans go on about how 'original' Joss was to do that ep!).

I'd have trouble ranking Brigadoom and The Bitter Suite... I love both! I think TBS is a 'better' episode, though I think I prefer most of the songs in Brigadoom (and I find it genuinely moving; I can't help but wonder which ship Kai's lover was in every time I see IWHS; it totally changes how I view the opening now, and it was already one of my fave openings of ANY show).

TBS, however, was a brilliant way to wrap up/resolve an 'impossible' story arc on Xena; I agree with the producers that any other way might not have worked.

OMWF has some fun moments but generally if feels like its trying to be 'cool' and 'cute' too much... it feel like "the ep that wants to win an award for being out there" rather than a natural choice. Like Xena, I suspect they wanted to resolve the major issue of the ep in an unconventional way due to the enormity of it (no spoilers, promise!) but in this case I can see much better ways.

Also, OMWF insisted on nearly all the real cast singing... and a lot of them weren't that great!

If nothing else, Brigadoom just sounds awesome, on the other hand! :)

Just about any show of length (and a bit of comedy) will have "the musical episode". Whether it be the sitcom "talent show" episode or "special musical guest star" or just a fun ersatz break from the normal show, like Brigadoom or OMWF. I remember Moonlighting did one and even Roseanne had a couple, covering several of those bases (dream ep, musical guests (even if Bonnie was a recurring for a while, radio contest, Dan singing to Rosie).

I do prefer Brigadoom over OMWF, as it seems a more natural/organic flow to the ongoing story. also, I really didn't care for most of the Buffy songs, esp the "show stopper/Big Reveal" song by SMG.

(can you tell I've spent a little too much time browsing TV Tropes? LOL)

Despite being about halfway through the series, "The Bitter Suite" was one of Xena's last good episodes, before the series got lost with harebrained story arcs and an increasingly muddled continuity.

I'm watching the episode right now for the first time and its BRILLIANT !!

Don't forget the movie series. Those came before the TV episodes.

Hard to say, but thank god lexx had a musical episode because without it, Xenia Seeberg would have shown that she has zero talent to perfectly compliment her awful (altered and 'augmented')face. I'll gladly admit she has pipes.

Are you guys kidding Brigadoom all the way. Once more with feeling was fine. But The Brigadoom was great.

Brigadoom had first of all the elements of a real musical, not only is the story big and epic enough to be a real play/movie it did something new in the show it self. It was a real prequel but it still carried the show forward. The songs felt new and inspired. Also i feel like adding that the Birgadoom or rather kais story is really well thought out and goes into some real philosophical topics. The culture is well developed. This is where the writer really gets to shine in my eyes.

Now Once more with feeling on the other hand didnt really do anything new in the series, yes there were minor things that happened but mostly it was just another monster. It did bring the story forward but not as much at all. The story the musical was based on was kind of weak and felt like padding, well welcome padding but padding non the less.
The songs didnt sound as inspired and really not as fresh as the once in brigadoom. It felt like any other hit song at the time.
The thing that made the episode worth watching was hearing Sarah sing and also i found it interesting that they didnt shy away from Xander even though he obviously didnt have the singing ability like Sarah or Anthony Head do.
Anthony is a really good singer too bad he didnt really get to do his own thing.

Also some songs felt kind of missplaced and redundant. Masters song was a great chance to go with his character and make a good Punk song instead of that modern love song they used.

In Birgadoom no song was unnecessary. But again in Once more with feeling some of them kind of were and seemed more like a chance for the character to sing than for the plot to go forward.

But i still like the once more with feeling one but Birgadoom is much, much better in term of all elements in my opinion.

Does anyone know if the score of Brigadoom is actually available anywhere on cd? Thanks for any replies.

The Brigadoom soundtrack has never been officially released. The permissions to release it were never obtained. It is available to download on several websites however, such as http://www.lexxdomain.com/brigadoom2.php

BRIGADOOM. Without a doubt, BRIGADOOM.

It's funny you ask that... I always imagine Kai and Spike hanging out and being hilarious best friends. Spike always sarcastic, Kai looking at him like he would look at everyone anyway, stoical. Even just their hair-dos paired up would be hilarious. It would be awesome, and I wish it didn't just exist in my head. Couldn't there be a Kai/Spike show?

Anyway, I love both Brigadoom and Once More with Feeling, if you couldn't tell!

reply

Um.

Once more, with feeling.

And sorry, but thats a total nobrainer.

First, I love Lexx, but qualitywise it cant hold a handle to Buffy the vampire slayer, the possibly best tv show of all times.

Second, the episodes dont compare at all.

Once more, with feeling is not only much more varied and even musically better, but also well integrated into a very complex and multilayered storyline, progressing it nicely in a multitude of respects.

Brigadoom however is basically a total interruption of the storyline for a history lesson, and not a very interesting one at that, either.

Forever_Knight, ONCE MORE WITH FEELING was great but all it did was to out Buffy's unhappiness at being ripped out of heaven by her friends and returned to the Hell that is living on Terra. It was heartbreaking for her and her circle of friends but it wasn't earth shattering. It only had an effect on fewer than ten people.

BRIGADOOM changed the mindset of our protagonists and persuaded them to fight against the Mantrid drones that were consuming the universe. They saved the Light Universe, or at least they turned and they made the attempt to fight for it. The Light Universe outweighs a single planet. It had an effect on the population of Planet Terra, between seven and eight billion people.

Don't get me wrong, I love them both madly but BRIGADOOM has greater scope. It's Kai's origin story and it has a Time Prophet in it! (She was fantastic! I bid on her costume but I didn't win it!) BRIGADOOM has to win, hands down.

Sorry, Buffy, you are delightful, but Kai, Xev, Stan and 790 saved our entire Dark Universe for us. Thank you. Lexx helped, too, IIRC. Thanks, Lexx.

Bored now.
