'So long as our Lord is first served'

Yeah...hopefully I don't sound too stupid, but could someone explain this? They asked her if she would submit to the church, and she said, "Yes...so long as our Lord is first served." And then you hear gasps, and see shocked expressions. I'm just not getting it. Explain? Thanks in advance.

There's a line that follows that bit that's included on the VHS but not the DVD for some reason. I don't know why it didn't make the DVD, because that scene makes a lot more sense with that line included. Anyway, they're interrogating Joan about her clothing, and they ask her if she will "submit to the will of the church," as in, if she will wear female clothes if they tell her to. And she says, "Yes, so long as our Lord is first served." Then (this is the deleted part), as all the shocked mumbling is going on, Father Lemaitre (or however you spell his name) says quietly to Cauchon, "You will abandon this line of questioning, Cauchon. To continue it would be for the church itself to commit heresy." So basically, Joan was basically reasserting with that line ("So long as our Lord is first served") that she received her orders to wear male clothing directly from God, and she is challenging the church to go against God and make her wear female clothes. So, if the church made her wear female clothes, they would be contradicting God and basically committing heresy.

Anyway, I hope that helped. :)

Ooh like that. I didn't get what she meant either, but now i do. Thank you :)

She meant that in all things God must come first - our world hardly knows about that today...
