Over-acting and bad acting

The women in this movie are all awful. From Diane Lane who acts like she had her period in every scene of the movie to the fugly female captain of the other fishing boat.
They overact to a point where it's embarrassing and beyond that. And the scene where the fishermen all come home and all their wives come running like their husbands w
ere soldiers coming back from war made me almost puke. The kid is
annoying as hell and couldn't act if his life depended on it
Zero chemistry between him and John C. Reilly.

Awful movie that only americans can like

Wow.

Well, I love the movie and the acting--by ALL.
I'm still glad to be an American.

Yea, as if I don't have to sort through about 100 foreign films to find a decent one nowadays. This is a cheese fest, I'll give you that. Certainly watchable but regardless, the amount of Crap Vs Quality is a Universal Issue, not an American one. In fact, I'd say America is still making the Best Films on the Planet.

Agreed on cringe worthy acting. I saw this movie years ago and just rewatched it tonight. I ended up fast forwarding thru all scenes with awful Diane Ladd and pretty much all scenes that didn't take place on the ocean. I was able to reduce the viewing time to 1.5 hours this way and cut the cheeze.

Diane Lane as Christina Cotter in The Perfect Storm. Too pretty and her Boston accent was laughable. Bobbie's mom, the crew of the Andrea Gale, Rusty Schwimmer as Irene (aka Big Red,) and others, were well cast and very believable as the people they portray. Yeah, the leads had to be big bankable stars, but at least Wahlberg was from MA, knew the types in Gloucester who'd be crewing on the fishing boats and didn't have to be taught the accent. By contrast with all those who gave excellent, believable performances with decent Boston or New England accents, Lane sticks out like a sore, albeit pretty, thumb.
