Board up the windows DURING THE STORM?
Why such a stupid way of doing things. They should have board the crap out of the boat during the calm, and stayed in the safety of the boat during the storm. How stupid can you get?

shareNo one knows for sure what really happened, their boat was never found.
shareYou're not much of a sailor are you? Why would you board up the windows before the storm? You have to be able to captain the vessel during the storm or you'll have no chance. You only batten down the hatches if you have no other alternative and are taking on water, like they were in the film. If you aren't controlling the vessel than you have almost no chance in a large storm.

shareThe only reason why I can think of they did this during the storm was risk of the ship sinking. As you could see a lot of water was coming in through the windows and flowing below deck, and with no way out the ship would only continue to gain weight and eventually sink. But going by how much water was coming in every time the ship was hit it wouldn't take too long, so boarding up the window would stop the flow of water and give them a better chance at surviving. I imagine it wouldn't help the engines either, and their speed would reduce, hence they wouldn't get away as quick because of the excess weight.
shareMakes for a fun scene
