Am I the only one who found this movie incredibly trite and annoying? I cringed my way through this movie. I firmly believe that if they had been speaking American instead of German, this movie would have gotten much worse reviews. People get too enamored with the "exoticism" of it to recognize all the old used-up Hollywood cliches. I hate that crap in American movies so it's equally annoying here. And I'm not talking about the plot, the problem is in all the details (the worst being the pot-smoking scene I guess).

so the only thing that is true is you are the only one who find this movie annoying so that means you have a problem and you did nt understand this movie never mind so you better improve your brain :) i mean your movie brain then watch this movie again maybe you understand something and like it

What? How can anyone not understand this movie? Also, there are a few bad reviews of this movie out there. The New York Observer for one.

And please, show a little more class than attacking my person just because we disagree. It reflects badly on you.

i agree the movie is absolutely pathetic. i was very disappointed as i very much like fatih akins film, but this one seems like a more commecial attempt. i saw it on german tv a few years ago and i must say i am surprised the film gets any attention by newspapers in the usa.

I liked it, but I definitely agree that this felt like a typical Hollywood comedy. If this had been an American movie bankrolled by a major studio, it would have been playing at the local suburban multiplex anywhere in middle America. And I will admit that the fact that it was German made me more likely to watch it.

Yes, this film did have the feelgood element of many Hollywood films, but I believe that it is still not really like a Hollywood film - the feel was just different, from the way the plot unfolded, to the characters (not as exaggerated as those in films like Eurotrip.) In fact, I thought it to be a very Euro film!!!

Can't quite agree with that because unlike a typical Hollywood comedy this movie has a story, real dialogues and dialogues that feel real.
I saw a typical Hollywood comedy (except maybe for the tiny bit of nudity) not so long ago :

I thought this was a very sweet romantic comedy, and not trite at all. I'm a pretty steady viewer of foreign films and doubt I would be suckered by "exoticism." There are plenty of foreign rom/coms that have not worked for me. Perhaps the blend of romance/magical realism just isn't your cup of tea? You have to suspend your disbelief a little more with this kind of story (ala Chocolat, Antonia's Line and A Very Long Engagement). I also liked the structure of the plot and the way all the character's stories dovetail at the end. I'm looking forward to checking out other films by this director. I could see Hollywood trying to re-make it, which they rarely do well.

I agree with you, Laura.

When the original poster said, "I hate that crap in American movies so it's equally annoying here," I think he said it all. In contrast, I like sweet romantic comedies whether they're American or foreign-made.

Even though I like this movie, I won't disagree with you because everyone is entitled to his own opinion and I can respect yours. I do need to correct you on one thing, however: despite sometimes popular belief, "American" is not a language. This is sometimes difficult for Americans to accept and cope with because many Americans believe the world centers around the US, but our official language actually did not originate here. Regards.

as for the poster, i agree with you. this was a relatively simple movie that seemed like it thought it was a way bigger deal than it actually was. take the pot smoking scene for example. lots of people smoke weed, its not that exciting, but the script plays it up like its this monumental, magical experience. thats basically the film in a nutshell, or at least what i got out of it.

the pot smoking on the boat was a monumental, magical experience for the main character. if that is all you got out of the movie, i think you should try to watch movies with a less tepid mindset. be careful though, you might actually enjoy something you watch.

Actually, I think the point of that scene is that the main character, Daniel, who is something of an unadventurous nebbish, finally starts to let his hair down and walk on the wild side a little. For you, perhaps, smoking pot may be nothing to write home about, but for Daniel it's a radical departure from his safe, boring life. It shows the change his character is undergoing after having let Juli into his life.

To get completely technical, the United States doesn't actually have an official language. English is only de facto here.

it was one of the best on the road movies i have ever seen. i guess you have issues, otherwise you would haave liked it so much just like everyone else :)
