I gave this movie 8, because it's a great story about love and life, coming along with very good actors.

You couldn't be serious that this movie is about dope. Yes, I agree that drugs were used on several scenes, but drugs have nothing to do with the plot. If it is, how did drugs affect this story. How were the characters affected the characters. Did anyone of the two characters (Daniel and July) affected by the usage of drugs. The theme of this movie is that "We go through life trying to seek that person who will make us special, and yet not knowing that "special person" is just standing in front of us". I think you really missed the boat.

Actually, Daniel and Juli used "drugs" voluntarily in only one scene--the ride on the barge. It was a brief sequence about smoking marijuana, a minor drug, to show Daniel beginning to loosen up. It was in keeping with the "learn to love and live" theme of the movie.

Luna later drugged Daniel, but that wasn't his fault, since he didn't know about it. She was half-crazy and ended up in handcuffs because of it.

Daniel also hitchhiked, stowed away on a ship, stole a car, crossed a border without a passport, and escaped police custody. So I guess you think this movie was about a criminal mastermind going on a crime spree and getting away with it?

I give "Im Juli" an 8.5 of 10. I don't think there are any perfect 10s but I'd give a few dozen movies a 9.0 or 9.5.

I did. And I still think the same way. You may not like this movie, but you should appreciate the fact that to like or not to like a film (anything actually) depends on our character, taste, education etc. For me it was, a romantic, exciting, well acted film. also the director himslef is a great talent and a very smart guy. he'll do much better things in near future, because he likes cinema and he respects cinema.
to give me a better idea maybe you may want to name a couple of films that you think deserve 10 or at least more than 7. then we can discuss it further...

Personly I respectn your answer but hey you lessen the value of 10, i mean people shouldn't be careless with it.
I gave movie like Full metal Jacket, Planet of hte Apes(1968), 2001 a space oddessey 10.
I just can't rank Im Juli with those movies, try to take a look at your movie history, I think you will discover that Im Juli isn't as good as some of the other movies you gave 10.

The provovin question in my first post was of cause just to get answers.

well, all the movies you ranked ten are obv. so called "classics".
i gave this one 8/10, and i'm really sparing 10/10 votes on here.
only given 10/10 once (ok, didn't rate that much yet), and this was for My Sassy Girl. i need to feel movies that i give that high votes. i for myself didn't feel planet of the apes, as an example.

Think, Marmite.. you either love it, or hate it. Its only an individual's opinion. Those that like this movie, (like me) appreciate a well acted, and very well directed movie, even if the subject matter of the film is/isnt your marmite.

I loved im juli! and really do not care what others think! no need to discuss..it was a great romantic/comedy.. Also it s related to the European culture somehow, so I dont expect everyones approval.

Well i gave Im Juli. 8 Points cause the story is really good.
And the Cast rocks well i don't now why you don't like it but i understand peole who gave this movie a ten.
2001 is a 10 your right but you CAN'T say i give juli less then 8 or 7 point because i gave 2001 ten. THESE ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIES FROM DIFFERENT GENRES!!!!!!!!!! don't forget that or are you vote everytime like this?
Juli is for some people a ten cause these people love Roadmovies. You are if ia m right a scifi fan aren't you? so i guess wou give (gave?) i robot or independence day or whatever a better note then someone who doesn't loves the genre as much as you do.

The point of the scale is so that people who really like this type of movie, like me, can give them high scores while other people who didn't like it, like you, give it low scores. I think you can understand that. The point is that it evens out when a lot of people vote. I gave it a ten because I enjoyed it, not because of the great acting, the wonderful plot, or anything like that.

IMO, movies are made for me to enjoy them, not to rip them apart and analyze every detail. I gave films like Gladiator, LA Confidential, and The Sting 10s because I enjoyed them, whereas 2001 A Space Oddessey got a 6, because I got bored. Yes, it had great mise-en-scene and all that crap, but it was boring.

And one more thing... you gave Planet of the Apes a 10? *you* are the one that lowers the quality of a 10. j/k

if you think that this movie sucked than my advice for you is to go and find some movie that you call "classic" and watch it then come here and give it a ten so in my opinion anyone who asked the question should think twice when stating something like it. well i am a fan of full metal jacket, 2001 or movies that s.kubrick made but then arises a question is it because of the beauty of the movies that kubrik made or is it because of kubrik himself i like his movies. another example is im a fan of pulp fiction and when kill bill was coming i was sure it will be good. Ooops! the movie (imho) was sh..! anyway what im trying to tell is i sometimes catch myself unjust about the movies and in my opinion everybody does it. however im not saying that full metal jacket or any example given here is overrated, but i mean we have expectations and prejudices when sitting in front of the screen. that is to say some people behave, other than being an elite, elitist. all in all my friend who asked this question: "this movie sucked bigtime, I need some good explanations for giving this ,ovie so much. I'm awaiting answers..." dont be offended but you have no right in whatsoever sit. to ask a question like that. please be respectful to others thoughts, besides as i know the films is full of clichets and some nonesense i gave it a shiny 9 stars. though i think it deserved that 9 stars fully because it made me happy (a feeling i tend to forget nowadays).

- then go back to hamburg and read newspapers or books

this is a great movie i am studying in film school and the values of film criteria fits with the film so it is great. i gave 10 so if someone interest on movies such as planet of apes what i can say is welcome to the real world.

This movie is a gem :) it makes you feel good for the entire duration of the film and the smile on your face when you've finished it will last for hours. Movies don't have to be classics to get 10's, also not all classics are all that great. I liked it a lot and didnt hesitate one second to rate it as 10.

here here. some movies just stick in your mind. i don't 'rate' movies especially, but if I had to give a number, I would allocate 'ten points' to movies that personally affected me in some way. so this film would be a '10' because it stuck in my mind and reminded me of all sorts of things about life in general (travel and love to name a couple). if i had to, i would rate most hollywood movies with 1 or 2 points because most seem a little 'uninspiring'. of course there are exceptions: I saw Schindler's List the other day, and that was fantastic ('10' for effectiveness).

But then again, I don't rate movies.

There were a lot of plot holes. I mean really a lot! This movie can get maximum 5 out of 10. If I have to write all the plot holes I would really lose time. I hope you watch this movie with a real clever mind and see all the plot holes by your self.

Plot holes? Give us a break, Tarantino. This was a light hearted, fun, romantic, and endearing film. It was not intended to rival Gone With the Wind, On Golden Pond, The Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, or The Color Purple. For what it is was intended to do it passed with flying colors.

My taste normally leans towards action and bravado ala Gladiator, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, etc., but after stumbling upon this wonderful movie as a tossed in "free rental" (only because the picture of the actress on the cover caught my eye), I fell in love with "In July/Im Juli" from start to finish.

This movie opened my mind and heart in a way few films have ever done. After the third (and paid) rental of the movie I found myself committing to memory the lines of love so beautifully recited by and later to Juli - if you understood the movie you know which ones I speak of. If you don't then this simply wasn't the movie for you.

In a month I will recite them to my bride at our wedding. Like many women she is a beautiful mixture of all three of the beautiful starring ladies. Sometimes hopelessly romantic & flighty, other times very spiritual and deep thinking, and occassionally a little wild and crazy, but always irresistable. And like Daniel, it took me a while to figure out that she was everything that I've always looked and hoped for and more then I'll ever deserve.

I still love my action movies but there's nothing wrong with a good romance story every now and then. This one gets a 10 (for the delivery of it's intended message on a low budget)from me. It was like a wonderful, inexpensive vacation, for my heart and mind that will stay with me forever.

To the wonderful makers and actors/actresses of this film, my future wife and I stand and applaud you.

I agree with you. Sometimes a good movie has such influence on you that you will watch it over and over again and yet never find it boring. Oh yes, you learn to recite those lines by memory. The acting is far above average coming from Moritz B. and Christiane Paul. This movie is about finding your true love. Sometimes we go thru life seeking that person who makes us special and yet not knowing that special person is standing right in front of us. This movie is about Daniel and July destiny. Actually, July's destiny is more defined. She described that whoever picks her up will determined where the wind will take her. She probably knows that she is destined to be with Daniel. In any case she never let go of her dream even though she has to give out more than her share to make Daniel see her love is genuine. Who said a relationship has to be 50/50. Btw you just have to admire the acting of Christiane Paul, she is very very talented. Her smile is so sparking and charming and totally irresistable. Look forward to your response.

the whole point of statistics is this i suppose? some people give it a 10, some other will give a 6...
10 is still ten and would mean a damn good movie, do you have a perfect scale for grading the movies? technically? emotionally? personally? i don't think anybody has.

I agree that this film wasn't that good. Not rank awful, but not that good either.

But if you want to see a really bad German film, check out Bandits. You won't think In July is nearly as bad!

hi,

the romance isn't the main point.

to 'translate it into us-american', it is about something like a latino who was born in the states, and still feels strongly for his / her own culture but knows that us-americans don't share his / her feelings - one day realises that that culture IS him / her and there's nothing he / she can do about it.

just think about it: is turkey in europe? does it have a european culture? - you wouldn't think how difficult these questions are, and there are no right or wrong answers.

the characters being played by mixed actors / actresses also gives a strong feeling to it.
