Who would like to see Grim Fandango, The Movie?

I was thinking, what if PIXAR picked this title up and made it into a movie? What would you like to see change or would you rather it be a carbon copy knock off of the game?

Would you watch it? Would you rather it be more Adult themed or more toned down for childeren?

Personaly, I would love to see this become a motion picture done in spectacular 3d animation. I would love to see the movie in it's dark, violent and disturbingly peaceful scenery. What's your opinion?

reply

I totally agree. What about making 4 movies? One for every year.

reply

Yeah pixar, thats exactly what i was thinking today as i revisited the game for the first time in many years.

Pixar isnt afraid of doing stuff thats a little challenging, dark or heavy. Unfortunately they also dont seem to do adaptations so i guess if it ever happened, we would have to settle for a dreamworks version where the star names and christina agulliera songs are more important than the story.

Unless the guys who worked on antz made it....now antz was a great film

reply

Yeah, you're not the only one with that idea. <3 It'd be awesome. However, a few things:

+ the same voice actors. omg. Otherwise it just wouldn't be right.
+ addition of plot detail, i.e. taking certain details and events from the NOVELISATION and combining them with the game version.
+ there has to be either the same amount of violence as in the game or more; they CAN'T make it for kids. No. Screw that. x3 Even though it's rated G8+/T as an adventure gaming product, the plot has to be complex.
+ MUST have good animation. CRUCIAL.
+ Tim Schafer requires some say in how the film is to be made; i.e. location art, animation of characters, etc. He has AUTHORITY.

Ach, you get me.

I agree, if they toned it down THAT WOULD SUCK! I like the 4 movies for every year thing. Also if Manny is a different voice I protest

I think if they ever made this 4 movies who be impossible, what could probably happen is 2 movies. The first two years, then the next 2 years. Although it would be nice to have all 4 but it's not very realistic...then again no matter how much i'd love it this any movie of this isn't very realistic.

reply

Doing it in 2 and 2 years isn't good. That'd be like lord of the rings in 2 movies instead of 3. There's a years worth of interval between each chapter of the game. If you don't like a single movie idea, maybe make it a mini-series. You know, 4 episodes of an hour each or something.

It's a great idea though gotta agree about the voices. Essential that they're the same. It's just so much part of the atmosphere. And they must use bits of the old soundtrack.

reply

it wouldent really work without a LOT of reworking like, you couldent have an entire movie of walking around and using X with Y, yknow?

reply

Speaking as an occasional wannabe screenwriter, I don't think it can be done. Animated films, especially computer animated, are rarely over 100 minutes, because animation is so expensive. Every minute of film is millions of dollars in animation. And to do Grim Fandango justice, it would have to be 150 minutes, minimum. Nobody's making a 2.5 hour animated film based on a beloved but unsuccessful video game. Not gonna happen.

It might be feasable to do it with stop-motion hand-animated puppets ala Wallace & Gromit or Corpse Bride, but the scope of the story would make that difficult, too. I don't know how you animate a flaming runaway freight train by hand.

reply

well, it could be done, I was thinking about that too, mainly because the game already is a movie, and it should be made out of the same perspective (1 camera angle per set).

then again, I'd do it with real people and computer animation. because it would be to cool to see it happen in real sets, the real, but darker, world.

Watch Casablanca it's practcly where year 2 and some of the the most important plotlines came from.

reply

I don't see how that isn't good. Sure the time gap is something to take into account, but the first year's translation to the big screen would be dreadfully boring if it lasted longer than 20-25 minutes. Year 2 is by far the biggest, and most engrossing part of the story (at least at one location), so combining that into the first year would be easy.

It's either that, or showing the events of year one in some sort of flashback.

I would like to see it made, but the story shouldn't be the same as in the game, that story could more be like a mentioned side story... What I'd like to see is what happens inbetween the chapters? That is, just take one of those "inbetweens" (like the time from when he arrives at the city, to when he leaves after having built a great casino)

Or maybe the time before the game?

It wouldn't make much sense to take everything from the game, and make it into a movie, then it would be much better to just play the game again

And of course we need the same voice actors :)

Keep... Tim... Burton... the hell... away... from Grim Fandango. For the love of God, please.

reply

Why don't you like tim burton? i think he would be the best to make this a movie, i mean if someone told me that grim fandango was writen by burton, i wouldnt hesitate for a second to believing it, especially if it didn't have the stupid children jokes here and there, which i wouldn't want in the movie.

What i would like to see in a movie is tim burton, claymation, maybe a few of the same voice actors but id settle with similar voices, the same story, but changed in most details so we're not just playing the game again but seeing it in a different light. I honestly think grim fandango would have made a better movie than adventure game in the first place....

But what i would really want to see is a monkey island movie instead of a grim fandango movie

"But what i would really want to see is a monkey island movie instead of a grim fandango movie"

the curse of the black pearl is actually based on monkey island, with different names and all (let's hope that bad pirate dude doesn't resurrect as many times as lechuck did, that would just suck).
as for the gf movie, I think tim burton will do a great job.

The problem is, Grim Fandango is essentially the perfect game. In my view there is nothing the developers could have added or subtracted that would not have made the game worse. So in order to make a movie of it, they'd have to up the graphics, remove loading times, ad a running AI script and just film that. There. The perfect Grim Fandango movie is the Grim Fandango game. The second best Grim Fandango movie is a movie actually made by someone else from scratch.

I agree for the most part. The only problems I found with the game was some of the vagueness about what to do where. Once you figure out what to do (I felt so proud when I looked at the picture in year two and figured out instantly what to do with the ticket stub maker) everything falls into place. I love challenges with the games I played, but some of the puzzles put even the difficult puzzles in Riven to shame.

Rumor has it, last I heard, the movie is coming out with none other than...................... Tim Burton as the director.

reply

I just finished reading that on gamespot! That is why I jumped over to imdb. That would be crazy! I love Grim Fandango!

reply

Yeah I thought that too. Then I read this....

A Gamespot blog article [1] first mentioned rumors that Tim Burton would be directing a Grim Fandango movie, but later the rumors were revealed to be a hoax, originating from the same source on several different websites and blogs.

... and my hope was brutally crushed. I want a Grim Fandango movie! Somebody please make one!

reply

Sorry if this has been said by someone else but I don't have time to read through all the posts.

If there was a film or a second game made then there would have to be a few things to think about.

We all know what happens in the game so why make a film about what we already know.

One of the bits that I find great about the game is that the plot only moves on ever day of the dead. Having a film follow a year or two year period is pointless. Nothing really happens that is part of the plot in the spaces in between and like I've written above, we know the main story anyway.

And also on the subject of the "one film per year thing", think of the first year and how little actually happened in it. Again, if that year follows the whole year we'll get to watch Manny and his business exploits.

Manny and Meche could not be in it (at least not together). In the total game time manny and meche spend only so much time togther through out the whole game and most of that time is travelling.

A sequal could not have Manny & Meche (because they've left this world behind and can not come back), Salvador or Hector (because they were sprouted), etc. Any sequal would have to be new with only some characters returning. Unless it was a prequal but then there would still be no meche and there would be no relationship between most of the character (all though they could take a closer look at Salvador and the LSA).

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick on anything but I had to voice my thoughts. Better get back to work.

reply

What Burton actually said was that he was going to start working on this project AFTER he was done with his current one. We might not have any news regarding this movie for another year.

reply

Ugh! Stop stop STOP WITH THIS RUMOR! At least until there is at least one shred of concrete proof.

reply

Dude, have some patience. It's not gonna happen until 2008 at least
