Primo secrets

I don't obsess about many things in this world of ours, but I AM obsessed with this game. It's been about 5 years since I first bought it, and judging by how it pretty much had me addicted for this past week and I STILL am not tired of it--well, I'm hooked.

But it's odd there are very few websites online that give out any good "easter eggs"--you know, secrets you probably didn't catch the first 2, 3 times around--besides really, REALLY obvious things like "On the Rubacava docks, the moon has a face on it." Well, no kidding. I have no time or skills to put together my OWN website, so I'd thought I'd open a forum here on this board for hidden Grim Fandango secrets that you might want to try the next time you load the game up.

Here's a good one to start the ball rolling: In Year 3, Meche demands that you hand over "your" gun. After this conversation, try asking the angelitos if they have one--the ensuing conversation is long and hysterical.

reply

Hmm. didn't know that. Going to test it out in the future.

It has been a while since I played it but if you type 'blam' in the game Manny explodes.

I hope it's the correct word. Reply when you think it's not.

Also in year two: when you release the bee from the prison and join the group of bees afterwards, you can shout/sing (As I said, haven't played it in a while) along with them.

If you're not on time delivering your line, a bee will respond to that. Very funny.

This is probably one of the best easter eggs in the game--remember when you bring the slip of paper to the tattoo artist and ask him about it, he says "Rusty Anchor--besides the song, the poem, the bar, and the statue by that name?"

Well, these things all exist! (well, all but one.)

Go to Olivia, and she'll read you her "Rusty Anchor" poem.
Go to Terry, and he'll regale you with a story of hanging out at the "Rusty Anchor" bar.
Best of all, go to Glottis, and he'll play you the song "Oh, Rusty Anchor."

But so far, I haven't been able to get any character to talk about a Rusty Anchor statue. Anyone have any ideas?

reply

Maybe it's just a statue you can see. A physical statue. (I haven't gone back to the game in a while - I think I will today!)

Hmm... maybe...

reply

Wow, I really didn't know that and I've combed this game in and out. There's gotta be someone who will mention the statue since everything else is mentioned. Maybe Membrillo, Carla or Lupe.

BTW, this isn't really an easter egg since it wasn't included in the original game (for some freaking unknown reason), but if you check out my post about the GF novel and extras and listen to the sound clip of the deleted conversation between Domino and Manny, there are some funny tidbits in there. For example, Domino says something along the lines of "I tell you Manny, that car [Bonewagon] doesn't look safe to me". Of course, you find out the significance of this statement when you return to Rubacava and find the bomb wired with explosives.

i was just stopping here to ask that same question. i have looked quite a few times for the statue. i am planning on making a watchable version of the whole story just editing out the portions where you walk somewhere that you have already seen the location of. i have worked out a good sequence for showing most of the easter eggs and the best dialogue options and so that you get the clues before puzzles are completed. the one thing i would really like to include is all of the rusty anchor references. i have worked in the 3 you mentioned but have never found the statue.

reply

Wow, it has been a bit since anyone posted on here.

Anyway, there is a statue above the police station. Is that it?

I'm addicted to this game aswell. We could open a forum in the style of Grim Fandango (Skulls and stuff) and like you said add easter eggs and faqs ect.

Just a thought (and I haven't tested it), but have you tried using the Rusty Anchor slip on the statue that Manny can't decide what it is? ('Let's just say... it has something to do with Justice'). That seems like it'd be the obvious place to slip that in.

With regards to Easter Eggs - I'm not sure how this came about, but one time in the Blue Casket I got Olivia to read one of her poems, and she did one which was just lines of the 'improvisation' that you do if you try to read a poem yourself ('CLAMBAKE!' etc). I've never had that happen again and I'm not quite sure how I did it!

reply

I think you can actually make Olivia recite your own poem(s) more than once,
all you have to do is go up on the stage and let Manny read another poem (btw, those improvised lines cracked me up), then ask Olivia to read a poem and she will steal yours again.

I wish there were more easter eggs, I already tried all of those you can find on the Grim Fandango fansites. :(

While having the cards in your hand near Eva, if you "use" the card while looking away, then "use" it while looking at Eva, she'll say "Maybe card tricks some other time, when I'm not so busy" but it comes out of Manny's mouth. Not sure if this is a bug. Similarly, outside Mebrillo's shack, if you turn around and then use the door, Manny will reach through himself to open it.
In the way of real easter eggs though, the only one I remember that hasn't been mentioned is that there is a very brief shot of a Full Throttle neon sign on the roof scene with the giant neon lady whose leg you slide down. I'm pretty sure its only visible in one quick shot during the cutscene of Hector falling, but there might be another way to see it. It's been a while.
