What was the joke about Elsie's age?

It seemed to be some kind of joke through the whole series about Elsie's age.... Were they trying to say she was an old hag or something because she wasn't?

She and Mendel made a cute couple but I wanted her and Nick to get together...

The whole thing with Audrey will they or won't they didn't pay off as the series ended LOL
