Was this film well received in the former East Germany? I have a friend who grew up in the DDR and he hates West German film about East Germany: Goodbye Lenin, The Lives of Others, etc.

"Sonnenallee" was very popular in East Germany as far as I know. I'm from East Germany and I and my family and friends enjoyed it very much. Much more than "Goodbye, Lenin" also because several actors (who played the main characters) are East German, like Alexander Scheer, Teresa Weißbach, Katharina Thalbach, Henry Hübchen and Alexander Beyer.

The East Germans I've talked to prefer this film over most of the others. Plus, there are a lot of in-jokes only East Germans fully understand.
