Why did he do it? -spoiler-

I was wondering why at the end Martin chooses to go to jail, if he could have saved himself. I know he felt guilty and all that, but maybe it would have been better for him to raise his child instead of being imprissoned, don't you think?. Anyway, it's a long time I haven't watched this movie , so maybe I forgot some things. I loved this movie, but it made me feel sad at the end knowing that he chooses to pay for his crime even though he could have avoided that.

Because all he knows how to do is run away from things. When Alice challenged him to be happy at the end he ran off straight to the police station. I have zero sympathy for that character.

Yeah, he never knew/was thought how to deal with failure and regret within his life, so he, himself, is a living excuse for a taunted past. The reason he didn't got to stay with Alice raising their kid and choosing to go to jail instead, can only be seen as Martin thought this was the only way he could give himself some peace of mind and claim for self-redemption, for there was no other possible way for him to do it.

Guilt, plain and simple. He killed his father in a fit of temper. He may not have meant to kill him but the act illustrated murderous feelings he harboured. Being in prison is a symbol for the only way Martin can feel safe.
