Whatever happened to Cinderella's father?

He's alive at the beginning of the musical. He announces the arrival of the carriage and kinda grunts at Cinderella when she wishes him good-bye.

Then he disappears altogether.

When his wife and step-children are living at the palace or wondering through the woods he's nowhere to be seen.

I'm guessing he died out of view.
