Film 7 -S. Carrasco CHRIS KIM

This controversial film by Salvador Carrasco brings out a pensive nature in the audience. When the Spanish Army takes over Aztec rule and forces them to convert their beliefs. It was very interesting to me when the baby fell from Mary's arms towards the end of the movie and Tomas dying in Mother Mary's arm that he replaced the baby's persona. It showed that through it all he did not lose sight of his religion and tried to show that both religions were one and the same in different times. It bothered me when Friar Diego said "They are one in the same but just from two different worlds" because if that were so and he truly believed that, then what would be the harm in letting the Aztecs stay worshipping their mother goddess. What I did not understand was the reasoning behind Topiltzin and Techuichpo's consummation in the middle of the movie. Were they in love? Weren't they sister and brother? All in all I believed this movie to be excellent in showing the struggle between a man and his own identity, while being forced to find a new one.
