Space Odessey

I was watching this (again) and at the end of the first scene between Earl and Phil, there is a shot of Earl lying in bed, an old dying man, and it is lit in such a manner that it reminded me of Dave near the end of 2001:A Space Odessey in the bedroom. And at that moment, the opening to Also Sprach Zarathustra starts playing as the scene shifts to Frank Mackey's entrance to his seminar.
