'Evacuated to the country'

Is it stated in the book which country region the story takes place? John Thaw's accent in the film is that of either Norfolk or Suffolk,(which he does very well) or was the decision to locate the village in East Anglia in the film a decision of the production team. I can't recollect a mention of the country region in the book. It's ironic that I was evacuated from the Suffolk countryside in WW2 to the Midlands which was then considered 'safer' (Lowestoft is the nearest point in UK to Germany and was bombed regularly).

The book doesn't comment on the area he's sent to, but Tom's accent would indeed be a Norfolk-area one.

Hey we don't talk like that in Norfol.

fmr norfolk, virginia.

Lorries full of soldiers retreating from Dunkirk trundled through in one scene. I'm not familiar enough with English geography or with the route they would have taken to comment further, but this might narrow the possibilities down considerably. Then again, I understand that anyone in almost any part of the country who owned a seaworthy boat might have assisted in that event.

I think judging by pronunciations in the book, it may be Devon.
