Where Did "Powderpuff" Come From?

Sometimes the characters mix up the names. My guess is that people were mispronouncing the name if they put it in the show, if you know what I mean?

EDIT: Yesterday, I was talking to someone and she called them the "Powderpuff Girls". lol.
