Amazing story, Amazing people

This film is something that all people should see, no matter what their religious background is. It tells the story of a group of young survivors of a horrible situation, and their strength.

I was lucky enough to know Alice Lok Cahana in the 1980's in Houston. Her son, Michael was my roomate just out of college, and I was a guest in their home on several occassions. Ms. Cahana was also on the board of the theatre where I worked, so I got to see her in social settings as well as more candid home situations. One thing at that time was that she wouldn't talk of her experiences at the hands of Hitler. She didn't want to dwell on the pain, but to find a way to receive joy from her survival. She received her healing from her artwork, which worked to bring "rainbows from the ashes". I never got the feeling that she didn't want to remember, she just didn't want to rehash it over and over.

When I first heard of the Shoah foundation, I asked Michael if his mother was going to participate. At that time she wasn't sure if she wanted to tell her story. I am so glad that years later, she changed her mind. It helped to satisfy my curiosity about her family and their struggles. Her story, along with all the others in this film, touched my life, and made me realize that my struggles are petty compared to what others go through. May I only live as blessed a life as these people have since their survival.
