I think you might be referring to their intentionally dyed or blackened teeth, which was a custom practiced in Japan and some other parts of Asia - and in some parts of Asia it's still practiced today. Women (and sometimes men) intentionally blackened their teeth with certain dyes and other natural ingredients. I've seen examples of it from time to time in samurai films that took place a couple centuries ago. Here's an article on it from Wikipedia:

If you've seen other Japanese period movies, you've probably seen women that shaved/plucked their eyebrows out and drew in new ones (with charcoal?) mid-way up their forehead. Now -THAT'S- a bizarre look too!
