Sonny Chiba DVDs

It'd be nice if Tarantino would produce some decent Chiba DVDs. Who's with me? I have 13 movies on DVD and not one is even VHS quality.

Chiba still rocks!

reply

Yeah, you're right. None of Chiba's films have been given a quality DVD treatment, which is a shame.

Are you a fan of Golgo 13?

G13

I’m Golgo 13 and I approve this post.

reply

I wouldn't say I am a Golgo 13 fan. A white American dude saying he digs Galgo 13 is a little too much like some silly white girl saying she is a Hello Kitty fan.

I'd like to say that I'm a fan of Golgo 13, but I'm afraid that I haven't had enough access to the stuff that I'd like to see and read, various movies, video games, and of course, the manga itself.

…how do you know you’d like to be a fan?

The mangas may be a bit difficult to find but there are a few on Ebay, as well as the two NES games. The live action film, I believe, can be ordered off Amazon. Same for the two animes, though you may be able to pick them up at your local FYE. I especially recommend The Professional: Golgo 13. For a bit more info on G13, check out my profile.

I say that because I don't feel as though I know enough about the series as a whole.

Anywho, I've already played Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode and Golgo 13: The Mafat Conspiracy for the NES. Good games, although I haven't gotten as far into Mafat as I'd like to have. I've played through most of Top Secret, but I keep getting lost in this one maze. I'd also like to play the arcade game (which you can purchase on eBay and play the various PlayStation titles. I also wouldn't mind seeing what happened with the Golgo 13 game for the N64 which I believe was never released.

The live action film...aren't there two of them? We've got Golgo 13 (1973) here, and then Kolwoon (however it's spelled) Assignment listed as 1977. Either way, I've only seen Kolwoon available in the "Kill Chiba" set, which I plan to get eventually.

I've already seen The Professional: Golgo 13. Fine anime movie, although I'm fairly upset that it isn't out on DVD. I still have yet to see Queen Bee.

As for the manga, I haven't bought any of them on eBay. I'm a big collector of video game soundtracks, and they eat up my money, leaving no room for Golgo 13 comics. And when I do have money for them, they are no where to be found on eBay, go figure.

...I reply.

Yeah, I like the two NES Golgo games too. I think Top Secret Episode was ahead of its time is some ways; complex plot, variety of game-play (including first person shooter segments), etc… But like you said, it’s a little too difficult, especially with the mazes.

There are Golgo 13 titles for Playstation?

It seems like there are two live-action Golgo 13 films but I can’t find very much at all on the 1973 release. I own The Kowloon Assignment on DVD but haven’t watched it yet. I bought the OOP DVD release a while back but I saw that it was included in the recent “Kill Chiba” set, which would probably be a decent one to own too.

The Professional: Golgo 13 is indeed a fine anime, even the best in my opinion. There is a DVD available but it’s Region 2…hopefully we’ll get one over here eventually, preferably with a few extras. Queen Bee is a nice follow-up to The Professional. Not as good, mind you, and a bit too short but enjoyable nonetheless, with a great ending sequence that plays over the credits.

I don’t have any Golgo 13 mangas either but then again, I’m not into manga. It would be cool to flip through a couple of ‘em though!

Yeah, there's two or three PlayStation Golgo 13 games, interactive comic books, really. Rumor has it that they had the option of being able to be played in English.

If you go up on eBay and have someone money at your disposal, you can buy a Golgo 13 slot machine, or a sniper game (the arcade machine I mentioned earlier). It looks like it's Silent Scope-knockoff.

While I'm thinking of it, you can order the movie poster (isn't the real movie posters like you see at movie theaters, mind you) at Right Stuf for $3. http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/ApPrST4ub=6oeifgu=/browse/item/3125/4/0/0

So then, I assume the games were only released in Japan? Got any links to ‘em?

I saw the EBay items…pretty cool but I’m not willing to spend money on them. That poster, on the other hand, is a deal at $3! Thanks for the link!

Cheap bastard! You make your mom buy your underwear and now you won't buy the G-13 pinball game.

I don't think, therefore I am not.

No screenshots, but here's one link that provides the names.

http://www.worldhistory.com/wiki/L/List-of-video-games-based-on-licensed-properties.htm

Here's the big-ass list that was created to name every single video game that had been based off an anime or manga. Unfortunately, the link I'm going to give you is an old one, a really old one. The creator of the list doesn't do it anymore, and I think the very last update was in 2002, maybe 2003. This is however, where the "rumor has it..." thing was listed.

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/games/anime-faq/

Also, when getting the poster, I'd suggest getting two or more of it. The price is pretty damn low, so I doubt they'll have it for much longer. But you could also be in the same situation as me, where I've got one nicely framed in my room at home, and one that serves as a "bitch" poster for my dorm room.

…your second one gave me the title names and I plan on looking into them when I have some more free time. If I find anything really interesting, I’ll let you know.

And nice thinking on buying two posters. They’re so cheap and like you said, who knows how longer they’ll be available. (“bitch” poster, haha)

Thanks.

I don't know what's up with the first link. It was seriously working 24 hours ago.

And yeah, the second poster really has become a "bitch" poster. I knew that stuff would happen to it last semester, so I don't care about it too much. Just there for decoration, next to my Beatles' Yellow Submarine poster. The Golgo 13 poster is actually held up with duct tape (I couldn't get it to stop falling off the wall), and there's a couple of rips in it from when my roommate and I were throwing chalk at each other.
