Saw this once several years ago on the movie channel and noticed that life aboard the ship Espen gets a job on was harsh indeed. The crew discipline was brutal with Espen forcibly bent over the ship's railing and getting his bare bum smacked with a whip.

The old captain also threatened that same corporal punishment over other members of the crew, clearing showing how tough it was on the high seas for men way back when. No wonder the ships had to resort to "Shanghaiing" in the old days. No one cared to endure endless months on the rolling oceans with nothing, but cramped quarters, creaking wooden ships and strict discipline. It would have been a tough ordeal. Effective though in keeping sailors in line and fearing authority. No captain wants to get their ship in a mutiny.
