The Pilot episode was weird

Didn't really feel like part of the series. The actress who played Kayla wasn't in the episode besides the beginning, and she was playing a fan girl. Instead, the "main girl" in this episode was a hispanic chick who we never see again.

it was strange but I thought most of the changes made the show better.

Pilot episodes are usually filmed a while before the show airs. It's quite common to have cast changes like that. Take for instance the pilot episode of Family Matters or the Cosby Show. I figure Duff was around at an opportune time and was able to audition for the role of Kayla or was just promoted because they knew her work. It's likely that she tried out for the main role initially. Not sure what happened with the original girl. Sometimes people get better deals...Damon Wayans JR filmed the pilot for the New Girl and Happy Endings but went with Happy Endings. I doubt that's what happened with her but you never know.

Pilots are often much different than the rest of the season in tone as well because they haven't quite found their flow yet.

I agree with the other poster that the changes made the show better, but then we don't really know where the original plot was headed.

Rest in Peace Chris Kelly
