what is Mel Brooks doing in this?

Isn't it very unusual that Mel Brooks acts in something that he hasn't made himself? I know he doesn't even appear in all of his own movies he has directed/produced, but this is quite unique right? that he only acts in a movie.

advent sunday, and i ain't got no candle to lit,
but it's alright, since you came by to visit,
lucia day will come, and i ain't got no lucia all dressed in white,
to walk through in my home, in these traditional lucia times,
i recall girls who go on a lucia visit to,
but i don't miss it though,
those times no longer come my way,
but you're my lucia today,
i remember the old times,
way back when i was a child,
those parades on the street,
so many lucia girls i did meet,
i no longer visit those parades,
but you are my lucia today,
it's alright, that those times are gone,
becouse when you are around, i don't miss that at all,
no, i no longer light candles on my desk,
but to be honest, in compare with those lucia girls, i like you best,
i don't miss those old times in any way,
becouse you are my lucia today,
i don't lit four candels on december, but i do pray,
that you will continue to be my lucia, on advent sunday.

He appeared in this because the director, Ezio Greggio, is a friend of his. He appeared in an unbilled cameo in his Silence of the Hams in 1994 and Greggio appeared in Brooks' Dracula. It is sort of a trade off.
