What is it with you People? What about this film don't you like?

I have just watched this for the second time and have been absorbed by the film and its performances.
Jeff Bridges is a legend, I have never been a fan, but everytime I watch a one of his films I think, yeah this guy is quality!
Nick Nolte again, his choice of films (the ones I have seen) are excellent.
To me as a thirtysomething and a very big film buff, its good to re-visit films you were never quite sure of the first time.

I haven't seen this but will endeavour to track a copy down. Jeff Bridges is right up there as far as I am concerned, and I have not yet seen him throw in a poor performance although sometimes his role choice is not the best. Nick Nolte is also a legend. I like both these guys their screen personas, images & talents, their commanding screen presence and watchability. In my opinion both should be oscar winners (Bridges for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot or The Last Picture Show & Nolte for Affliction). Throw is Sharon Stone and the legendary Albert Finney and that's a fair cast.

I also love a punt and the horse racing game, and the darker side in the skulduggery and race fixing and doping etc that goes on, so regardless of the ratings, reviews (and without having seen the film or performances) I have little doubt I'll enjoy the movie simply based on the quality of the cast and the plot premise.

It holds interest for me on a number of levels and is relevant. Relating to something helps you to pick up on subtle things within a plot around something with which you have a knowledge and interest in. You apreciate it for what it is within the bounds of the limitations & strengths of the script and/or performances.

A highly recommended zany character-driven cult classic comedy about betting, luck and race fixing is the brilliant LET IT RIDE, directed by Joe Pytka made ten years before this one. It stars Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Jennifer Tilly, Cynthia Nixon, Michelle Phuillips, David Johansen & Robbie Coltrane

Thanks.

I will check this film out.

I have this to say: Sam Shepard has a twisted view of 'real people in real America' - I think he understood something in the 70s but has spent too long lounging around Beverly Hills. Anyway, the actors here are engaging enough to carry a reading from a phonebook in my eyes, so it didn't matter that the melodrama was hilarious and pointless - I could watch Finney, Nolte, Stone and esp. Bridges making breakfast and it would be better than most of the junk out there. Add Keener in an unusual role for her repertoire and I'm happy.

I enjoyed the film, especially Nick Nolte's performance (even though he's more or less playing the same character as in the previous year's Affliction).

SPOILER ALERT

I'm wondering where Sharon Stone carried the revolver in her final scene. In her underpants would be the obvious answer except that she rides a racehorse a couple of miles with a Western saddle. Ouch.

Catherine Keener and Albert Finney were great in their scenes together, however unlikely their characters coming face to face in anything but a Sam Shepard play.
