The father

After seeing Halloweentown High and how awful it was I never watched it again or the sequel so if this was addressed I must've missed it.

However, we never really learn anything about the mortal father of the children. What happened to him that made Gwen so crazy about Halloween? I'm assuming his death or whatever really had something to do with it.

What we do know is this: Gwen used to date Kalabar who actually hated mortals and wanted to turn the residents of Halloweentown against them. We presume that Gwen was unaware of this enmity because she seemed surprised that he was the big bad. However, something may have happened between them that left her shaken with magic that she just ultimately chose to put behind her upon her return (that she never planned on.)

Gwen met their father on Halloween. I'm assuming this has SOMETHING to do with it. He was probably aware of her being a witch and maybe he too decided to raise the kids as mortal?

Dylan mentions that she gets depressed when they talk about him. I'm assuming that whatever happened must have been pretty bad for a mother to never want to talk about the father with her kids. Usually talking about loss is a good way to grieve with your children and move on. So did his absence have something to do with Halloweentown? That could explain why 1) she wanted to turn her back on Halloween and 2) why she couldn't talk about it with her kids.

So what really did happen to him? Was he unaware of it all and Gwen loved him enough that she wanted her children to grow up mortal like their father? Going back to them meeting on Halloween, was he aware and wanted his kids to be mortal? Or did something awful happen that drove Gwen to turn her back on it all and try to protect her kids as well?

Aggie never really gives her thoughts on him. She certainly disapproves of Gwen wanting to turn her back on her home and keeping her children from their birthrights, but she never states a prejudice toward mortals nor does she ever bring up the mortal father when arguing about Gwen's decision.

I just wish they'd have gone into it a bit more. It seems by the second film that Gwen is finally working on moving on by dating the 'golem' though she is still reluctant when it comes to magic herself.

What the hell happened? I know it's beside the point but I always wonder...

But that doesn't explain why she's so crazy against her own heritage and letting her kids choose for themselves. I just wonder

Yes, she wanted to put her past/heritage behind her and forget about it. The OP is not disputing that. What they are wondering (as am I and I'm guessing others as well) is why she was so adamant about turning her back on her heritage and insisting her children not learn about it and growing up as mortals, instead of as magic folk the way she did.

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.
