Will have its day

Like the movie Blade Runner which didn't do well at the box office, Final fantasy will one day be seen by the public for the ground breaking movie that it is. It was before its time. What a gamble and risk the studio took making a fully computer anamated movie. To bad the public at the time of its release didn't give it a chance. In the future, computers will be used all the time when making the simplest of movies. and at that time people will back at final fantasy as the art that is is.

Yeah, except that Blade Runner was a good movie and The Spirits Within isn't.

Watched "Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV" and I really enjoyed it! Great to see the progress hasn't stopped. Inspired me to re-watch "The Spirits Within" yet again, and once again amazed by the movie. And I STILL think it's better looking, in many ways over even "KG", and it came out 15! years ago. Just shows how ahead of it's time the movie was.

oh, please. comparing this to blade runner is like comparing carnosaur to jurassic park.

Just rewatched this a few hours ago. This movie will get the recognition it deserves, one day, that's for sure.

I loved Beowulf, but the animation in Final fantasy is simply ten times better and more convincing considering the characters (most of those in Beowulf are simply lifeless and ugly).

Yeah, that movie has simply come too soon. And it was directed by Japanese people. If an American had made this, believe me, the public would have clearly hailed it as avant garde.

P.S.: I love Blade runner, but I have seen The final cut last month, and I was a little disappointed: great movie, but not as great as in my memories...

I hope people one day appreciate it. I waited for four years for this movie to come out and was very saddened by the response it got. There's definitely a lot of imagination behind it.

reply

Lol. Carnosaur.

reply

Carnosaur was pretty fun, in a B-movie sort of way...

reply

No, stupid! He didn't compare the movie itself to blade runner(plot etc.)... but in the future FF:TSW might be remembered in a way that blade runner is remembered today.

reply

Dunno abt being as good as Blade runner. But the film is good. Just some finicky fans. Never played the game but i enjoyed the movie.

I've just watched it on blu-ray and completely agree. It's the ebst looking HD film ive seen yet, and if the movie came out now I think it would do well. It still seem miles ahead of any other similar animation and its 7 years old. I think you're right in saying it will eventually get the recognition it deserves. Or at least people will realise this type of film could work again

Why are pirates called pirates? They just arrrgghh!

I enjoy watching this movie, its story and animation are both very good in my opinion. Too bad that some western viewers just couldn't quite get it simply because they are not educated enough to appreciate the spiritual side of the story. It's truly unfortunate that our spiritual advancement took a back seat while we made huge strides in the field of science and technology for the past century.

i don't know if this movie will ever have its day unfortunately. as to whether it deserves to have its day may be under question. surely there is more to a movie than its special fx as fabjtown has suggested. however from my memory when i watched this movie (possibly the seven yrs ago) its storyline seemed to be quite captivating. i just can't remember how it ended. :(

I agree with you. This movie was completely underrated. It is understandable that the movie flopped because it didn't follow the line of the games, disappointing hard-core fans. This is a mature film, that has a very decent, important message on it. People have been focusing too much on the advanced computer animations, which is still, of today, surprisingly advanced. And the score of the movie, personally, I find it too be one of the best. Square Pictures started flying too high. It should have had set the ground to the hard-core fans first so they could later start accepting a more mature movie and, this way, reach other audience.

Totally agree. While both movies are different and it is unfair to compare them, both are unlike anything I have seen before and have to be two of my favourite movies. I don't understand why, in the last 6 years no other movies have been made like this. I guess the whinging, idiots who don't get this movie got listened to.

The movie cost over $120 million to make and Square put a lot of thier own money into it. They almost went out of business when this movie flopped. It has yet to even break even to this day. You can now get this loser pic on DVD for as little as $2.99 in some stores.

I got chance to tour the studios where this was still being made and commented how bleak and unlike the FF games this movie was turning out. The answer i got from one of the lead animators was pretty snooty like how dare i question what they were doing when i was just a writer at a anime magazine.

Beleive it or not, this movie was supposed to be aimed at a Western audience. That why when you look at the credits a lot of writers outside of Square were brought in to do this. Well, it flopped in the west and pretty much everywhere else.

As long as the characters didn't move it was very realistic. When they did move everyone seemed like stiff zombies even though a lot of motion capture was invovled to make the movements smoother.

Oddly enough, the movie based on FF7 that came after this mess is a lot closer to what this big budget version should have been.
