what a stunning film!!!!

i have just finished watching this film and i have to agree with the reviewer from 2000. what may just start out to be a film about the workings of the people in the porn industry and those that run it sublimely slides into a beautiful story of love and pain between nina and flavio. the hospital love scene, and i can't describe it as sex, is heart wrenching.

i can only urge everyone to see this film even though it is in italian without foreign subtitles. for those who are not used to full-on sex in movies i can only beg you to persevere and to see the story underneath evolve.

elisabetta is stunning and an incredibly brave actress for getting so "into" the character. if she didn't win any awards for this then there is no justice in this world. flavio insinna puts in a superbly subtle performance so beautifully portraying the fellow cancer patient.

a film that i will certainly watch again.

I'm not passing any judgment here. I haven't seen the film yet. But I keep seeing the same word used in every review. "Brave." Why is the actresses portrayal 'brave?' Does she actually have sex on camera? Is that brave? Does that mean that every performer in a porn film is brave? Where's is the distinction? Is there one? And is the actual sex (if there is some) really important to the film? That's one of those things I keep noticing about Michael Winterbottom films. He puts in sex, sometimes real, but it doesn't do anything to add to the film. It feels like it's there just to be "brave." Whatever that means.

And no, I'm not against sex. I just think it's really weird that so many people seem to think it's 'brave' when graphic and authentic sex is used in so called mainstream cinema, but it's crass and exploitative when it's used in adult film, or even low budget film. And when a respected or mainstream actress performs a sex act on film, she's 'brave.' But when an unknown or adult performer does it, she's being exploited. Does it stop being exploitative when you reach a certain tax bracket?

Just curious.

It is considered brave when a respected actor/actress does an explicit sex scene, because they are risking their reputation and career.

The average unknown actress in standard hardcore porn is considered exploited because she gets paid a very tiny percentage of what the producers/distributors actually make, and such an actress will find it all but impossible to get into mainstream film after being branded a "porn star".

You may not like it, and it is unfortunate that we still have such a parochial view of woman and sex, but there it is.

" it is unfortunate that we still have such a parochial view of woman and sex"

That brings up another concern. Why is the woman considered 'brave' for having unsimulated sex, but the man isn't even mentioned? Is he not brave, too? Talk about parochial views.

The man isn't even mentioned because there are no men here that were working outside the adult video industry who are performing unsimulated sex scenes.
It's just that simple this time.
