Quintus.......

Ultimately, a loyal friend?
Or....a snake (too little, too late)?

He was first and foremost a Praetorian Guard Captain.

What makes you think he was a snake?

I see your point, he simply did his duty. And perhaps there’s nothing he could have done for Maximus. However, it kinda depends how far they go back. Maximus was an honorable man, who fought many battles for his army. Quintus must have known what went down, and that Maximus was not only doomed, but so was his family. Based on how the guards were ordered to take him out and execute him, maybe he could have pulled them aside and arranged for him to escape. He certainly didn’t show any blind allegiance to Comodus once he was being bested by Maximus. He “did the right thing” and denied Comodus a weapon when commanded to provide him one. It would have been nice if he had followed his conscience and done the honorable thing before Maximus’ family was slaughtered.

If Quintus helped Maximus after he was arrested in Germania he would have been arrested and executed for treason.

Maximus knew this as well. In the deleted scene where Quintus tells Maximus that he was only doing his duty he even reminded him that explaining is actions away is on par with foregoing his duty. Basically, you make your bed and sleep in it. I don't think Maximus hated Quintus either he was just being level with him that they both entered into the service on the same premise

Quintus certainly suffers in comparison with Maximus’ slave Cicero who stays true throughout. I don’t think he fully redeems himself.

I’m not sure we can even rule out the possibility that Quintus backed Maximus in the end because he sensed that Maximus was the likely winner either way.
