Who was supposed to have been assassinated by the snake?

Towards the climax of the film, a coral snake is released into someone's bed. I've seen this movie nearly a dozen times and only on the last viewing did it occur to me it wasn't clear who was supposed to have been assassinated. Proximo didn't die until the raid on the gladiator compound, Graccus was on the field of the colosseum when Commodus died.

Was it meant to be Lucilla, but who escaped dying because she was out warning Maximus?

Just re-watched this and you're right! It's not clear at all who the snake was for. I also assumed Lucilla, but we never see her either getting bitten by it or escaping it. Bad editing.

I'm losing my mind because we are clearly introduced to two buffoon senators in Rome and if it wasn't Graccus or whatever then it's 1000% the other one, by default. How is this hard?
