Best old epics like Gladiator and Braveheart

I really like the feel of Gladiator and Braveheart and they're entertaining to watch. What else ranks highly as those two in terms of entertainment value and production? I know Braveheart gets criticized for its inaccuracies and occasional cheesiness but I like it.

The Passion of the Christ is also on my to-watch list.

Wow... in all these movies, the hero dies - Gladiator, Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan.

There's others too I like like Von Ryan's Express (hero dies) and few more...

I recently watched Braveheart again for the first time in like 15 years, and it was nothing compared to Gladiator.

Good compared to other movies, but nothing compared to this...

What we do in life echoes in eternity Russell Crowe as General Maximus in Gladiator (2000)

dream on! braveheart came 5 years before this! Both are epics.
one is full of os CGI and one isnt!
one is about about ROME and one is about scotland!

both films are great..
both are love stories..
both are revenge films..
you can see gladitor took a lot from Braveheart..

Check out Rob Roy with Liam Neeson and Tim Roth. A fantastic film which is better than Braveheart IMO.

reply

I don't think that Braveheart is a contender for "best movie ever" but Rob Roy is a poor man's edition of it.

Spartacus (1960) is much better than this or Braveheart, my fave old epic.

reply

Agreed. My favourite historical epic of all time. Gladiator wishes it was good as Spartacus.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut, preferably)
The Last of the Mohicans
Alexander (great production value and quite entertaining for the hammy acting)

Michael Kohlhaas (known in the U.S. by the silly title Age of Uprising) is an excellent period film in the same vein as Roy Roy and Braveheart, albeit smaller in scale.

There are also lots of great classic period action films (The Duellists [1977]) and foreign ones of all ages (from Seven Samurai [1954] to 13 Assassins [2013]).
