I forgot how great this movie is.

I just watched it on Netflix and it still holds up so good 16 years later.in fact the cgi Is still really good for a 2000 movie.and I forgot how great the story is.

I agree 100%. Also just watched it on Netflix. Truly one of the greatest films ever made. Honestly (I'm 28) I think we are past the golden age of unspeakable quality of movies like this these days. For me the late mid 90s to mid 2000s were MY golden age.

reply

My golden age for movies was the entire 80s and 90s, both those decades put out some of the best stuff. To this day when I go back and watch a movie I've already seen it's from those decades. I think 90s movies don't get the respect they deserve.

2000 was loaded with good movies.

Yeah like Snatch, Traffic, Memento, Almost Famous, The Beach, Gladiator, Finding Forrester, Tigerland, Requiem For a Dream, Final Destination

Agreed!!also watched recently

I agree as well. In fact, the first thing I taught after seeing the movie was that Russell Crowe was going to win the Oscar for this.

Laugh while you can, Monkey Boy!

I just watched it again I love it. One of my favourites.

I agree with every word (though not with the boomer approved “back in my day” responses). I remember when I was going to see the film for the first time in years, I was a bit worried it wasn’t going to hold up as well I hoped. I mean, reading some of the "it’s aged badly" and "it's not great all" posts had me kinda convinced for a minute that the film wasn’t going to leave a big impression on me like it did years ago.

And yet, when I finally gave the film another viewing for the first time in a long time, to my relief it was just as mesmerizing as I last remembered. From the direction, performances, production values, music, etc. this film is a spectacular one. One of the best.

reply

Couldn’t agree more.

The opening battle scene is second to none, and the film holds up very well to the end.

reply

yeah I agree it's a pretty great movie!

reply

Yeah it's pretty damn good. It's a shame we don't get historical epics like this anymore. I blame 300. Not because that movie was bad but suddenly studios thought people wanted to see Roman/Greek movies like that now. And we got a lot of crap like Pompeii and the Legend of Hercules.

reply

I actually enjoyed Pompeii, but I recognize that it's fluffy nonsense compared to a film like Gladiator.

It seems to me that the sword-and-sandals genre has largely gone dormant in recent years. Occasionally we do still get such a film, but even when we do they don't have the feel of the truly large-scale epics of yesteryear.

I'm hoping that this issue is rectified in the future.

reply

I think it just moved to television like that Spartacus show and Britannia.

reply

Eh. I don't feel like either of those really scratch the itch that films like Gladiator or Ben-Hur or Troy do.

There have been a few that have come along that I enjoyed fairly well. As I said, I did actually like Pompeii, but I enjoyed it as light entertainment and not as something to take seriously. The same goes for the Clash of the Titans remake and that Hercules film with the Rock.

We need some more serious, major epics that have gravitas to them.
