Winona Ryder's own mental illness

Did anyone feel like this film was almost prophetic of Winona Ryder's own nervous breakdown? The opening line foreshadowed her own shoplifting crimes.

Maybe we've gone from now to then, and back again? 😱
To paraphrase another line form the movie...

But yes, I noticed that too in the opening lines and thought it was interesting.

Too bad you can't just be a nice person.

Your posts on the Winona Ryder board are disturbing.

Actually, Winona's mental health 'issues' began before this movie came out. When she had to bow out of "Godfather 3", the 'official' reason was 'exahaustion'. The real story, at least according to the sources I have read, is that she was in a facility similar to the one shown here.

It was a hard time for WR, she was the 'It Girl' of the middle 90s, but, almost overnight, she had a dated look, and suddenly was playing second fiddle to Angelina Jolie.

No wonder she lost her mind...

Actually, for those of us who were adults when this was made, it's easy to recall that this was definitely Noni's vehicle. She was still the it girl and solid at the box office. Jolie was just a blip on the radar at that point. However, when it came out, the critics creemed themselves over Jolie and it became her breakout role, and was subsequently considered HER movie. They didn't even stick her on the cover until awhile after it was out on video and she had become a bigger name.

So, in my opinion, Jolie stole from Winona just like Gweneth the role in Shakespeare in Love, and because of that, we missed out on a lot of amazing movies that could have been. Oh well!
