Dorothy singing?

In the nightclub parts, Halle is performing as Dorothy and is lipsynching. Is that really Dorothy's voice? Did Dorothy make any recordings? It really sounds like the real DD's voice.

This is really late lol, but to answer your question, nope it's not her voice. They actually hired a contemporary jazz vocalist(I can't remember her name right now) to do all the singing for the movie. I had to find this out through the process of me looking for her version of "That's All", which is such a beautiful song, esp. the way it's sung in the movie. I was sure it was her too, but it isn't. That disappointed me.

It was talented Jazz Recording Artist Wendie Williams that did the singing.

All recordings with Dorothy Dandridge are compiled on one CD. Most of the material was never issued at the time. In fact, her voice was totally wrecked and she wasn't actually singing, rather reciting. The voice of the actual vocalist in the film has not much to do with Dorothy Dandridge's singing.

"Reciting" is what Ethel Waters did too, even before her voice was wrecked. It's a style, not just a handicap.

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'
