If the animation and atmosphere of the first film had been maintained, cut out the musical numbers, and got a basic re-write or two. (Fixing things like Brutus' character) Personally, I did not think the general plot of the film was that bad. I really liked the Martin storyline. It was a dark and twisted plot point worthy of the original. But they had to try and make it as kidfriendly and we got the poor product the film is now.

I know that Don Bluth had no involvement in this sequel, but I've read somewhere that he would've made Martin the hero and Timmy the villain.

There's also a novel version of the "sequel", but it was a lot different (and better) than this movie.
