Are we supposed to believe that Scotland is a dreary, sunless, dirty place, full of violent, soul-less, antisocial drunks?

Every city in the world, sadly, has pockets of poverty (call them ghettos, if you like), alcohol abuse, domestic violence.

It is not unique to Scotland, or Glasgow, or the United Kingdom.

This movie could have been made in an Australian, American, Swedish community with equal authenticity. The amount of sun might vary but the other features you highlighted are universal.

YES! I grew up in the Gorbals in Glasgow. It was every bit as soul-destroying as this film showed it to be.

Are ye daft, man? Every major city has slums.
