Crispin Glover /Roy Ostery hurt his hand ???

I watched three times and their was no mention of how he hurt his hand,in the beginning where he was having breakfast with the sheriff no taped hand the next time we see him at the crime scene of dead Betty husband he is all taped what when and was it real and not part of the story ???
