When this was released...

I was a teenager working in a movie theater.

It was a great job that took minimal effort and all the other people that worked there were either teenagers as well or adults that acted like teenagers.

I was working there when this movie was released and saw TV spots and trailers (I saw a lot of trailers because I abused my ability to watch movies for free) and it looked interesting and dark.

Once it finally started running, this movie did fairly well at my theater, pretty exclusively because there was a lot of senior citizens - predominantly women- filling the seats every viewing.

That already seemed odd enough but after watching the movie for myself I was couldn't wrap my head around why this movie would appeal to older (mostly) women so much.

Then I remembered that my own grandmother was a former nurse during WWII. And it started to come together for me.

These senior citizens saw commercials about a funny women who thinks she's a soap opera nurse and identified with it in some way.

That has always stuck with me how much of a horrifically brutal shock these people were in for and how they were not prepared for what they were about to see.

Every viewing after that, any elderly woman I saw heading into that theater, I felt a little sorry for but also couldn't help but sigh and laugh.
