I don't mean to be ignorant.....

I'm a Christian, but I'm not Catholic, so I don't know the "rules" and stuff. OK, in the movie, Brian says pissed and damn. Can real priests do that? I was just wondering. Well, and he drinks too, I don't know why I was thinkin about the swearing part when he's off gettin hammered.... Haha. But really, do they cuss in real life? And I guess I am wondering the same thing for rabbis. Just a thought. ;)

Yes, to your questions. I am Catholic and know lots of Priests. They are allowed to drink alcohol. My two cousins are nuns and they drink as well.

Yes, somestimes Priests swear. I have heard them. Remember, they get frustrated and say things just like the rest of us.

I know quite a few priests who swear, and pretty much every christian I know drink quite a bit. I have a hard time believing I'd go to some eternal damnation just because I say a few meaningless words. Try to picture sitting around Hitler, Ted Bundy and J.W. Gacy and saying that you went to hell for saying *beep* a few too many times. If God is that much of a prude, there's no chance I'm getting in.

Oooh, good thought! That's really true! Wow, cool, I've never thought of it that way.

I'm a Christian as well and I'm not Catholic either, but I was pretty sure that as a priest, you're giving your life to God for His purposes and you're supposed to be setting an example and leading the people in your church. I'm pretty positive that includes swearing. Like, would it make much sense for a priest to be saying that he's "right up there"with God and has devoted his life to Him, and then starts taking God's name lightly? I don't think I'd see a priest who swears as much of an authority figure or role model.

As far as drinking goes, I know a bunch of Christians who drink, but not to the excess. I mean, Catholics have wine for Communion, don't they? I think the key is not letting it become a huge part of your life and getting drunk all the time. Wow, that post was really long, but I had a lot of thoughts ;)

Taking God's name lightly and swearing are two different things. The word "damn" isn't taking God's name lightly.

And I don't think that ANYONE swearing makes them "not much of an authority figure or role model". I think it's ridiculously illogical to say that any words are negative or reflect poorly on the person. I can say "Damn, I love my life. Damn, I love the world. Damn, I love God and all of his people." Does saying that make you a bad person or role model?

Once you stop putting importance on certain words, you make them powerless. For example, if I wanted to I could replace the word *beep* with "cheese". "Man, I'm cheesing pissed off." Now, it seems fine and harmless, but is that not using a different word to say the same exact thing? So musn't we then deem "cheese" a swear word?

The whole idea of curse words are ludicrous, and show that the person making such an issue about it is ignorant and irrational. No offense.

Words don't reflect negatively on God, or anyone. It's actions that matter. If I think about stealing something, but don't steal it, is that still a sin? If I SAY "I'm going to steal that", but don't, should I still be sentenced for theft? The point is, when you place certain importance on random words, you have to look at the big picture.

I agree to an extent... my view is, of course priests swear, because they're human. The fact that they do doesn't make them less valuable as role models; however, I doubt any priest would swear regularly without checking themselves. I think they still try to be respectful and set a positive example. I don't know of too many priests who make a point of swearing to remove the power from the words. I doubt many would really swear to their congregations. But, we all have our moments.

reply

Well, the church places importance on swearing because it's viewed as unclean language. I can understand that, because that's how it's portrayed to the public. However, if a priest is in a crisis and he curses, I would strongly disagree that it means he is a bad example.

If we would remove the importance of the words themselves, and cease empowering them as shocking or special, we would end the necessity to have them. It's like the old saying "if you want to make something popular, ban it." By making a big deal out of swear words, we're making them somewhat fetishized.

I'm a Catholic, and we're damn proud to be hell of drinkers. Have you ever seen an Irish Catholic on St. Patricks Day? Pretty much regardless of ethnicity,Catholics tend to drink a LOT. Maybe it has to do with the fact it is the immigrant religion in America and our ancestor had to put up with lots of *beep* for generations.

I'm Catholic too and my priest who is Catholic drinks. I guess it really depends on your diocese. YOu can curse but dont make it a habit. SOme dioceses are more conservative than others.

GO CATHOLICS! LOL

I dont think that Father Ted would be the most accurate portrayal of Catholic priests but I do know a priest that drinks, swears and gambles. He'd never try to hide this fact from anyone he's still a brilliant priest that everyone respects.

What would the following words suggest to you: "Jack", "sleepwalking" and "bollock naked"?

I read somewhere that when Brian gets mad at Jake and says he "mucked it up" it had originally been the F-bomb but that tested poorly before finalizing for release so was changed -- many were turned off by the good-hearted clean-cut priest portrayed as also using vulgar profane obscenities when angry

Priests drinking isn't new or outlawed and priests have ended up in AA programs too
