Why would the skull in the fireplace go BOO! and scare Eleanor away?

I'm watching this schlockfest right now and Eleanor is being guided by the spirits of the slain children to find their remains in the fireplace. She does so, finds a limb bone, and then a skull, but lame CGI makes it go BOO! at her and she flees. Why would they do that if they so needed her help?

Sod it, this movie is full of crap, to be honest. I can't wait to laugh at the forthcoming lame CGI fest!
