Really wish they would remake this...

Just watched this version for the first time in years and it's just so disappointing as a remake of "The Haunting." The book as well as the 1963 film were so good and creepy. If I were to watch this as a stand alone movie (which frankly I do when I watch it), it's ok. It's one of those movies I watch because I grew up with it but it really isn't that good, especially during the second half where it falls apart. I get so sick of hearing about the children...it's awful. Someone really needs to do a remake that follows the book and original film closer. I understand changing things because you really don't want to do the exact same movie over again (I'm looking at you Psycho), but this version just got weird. What I liked so much about the novel and 1963 version was the fact that the House was just evil. In the book, Hill House is actually considered to be a character in the story. It's alive and it's evil. I don't like that they tried to give an explanation by making Hugh Crane some ugly-ass murderer of children. Overall, as a standalone film, I would rate it a 3/5...as a remake? 1.5/5 and that's being generous.

The novel and the first movie reflected a period of American culture that was about to come to an end. The emotional repression of the two main characters - Eleanor and Theo - (including their sexual repression) may have seemed plausible for that time. Updating it to 1999 didn't work well, which is probably why the filmmakers added all the distracting plot baggage about Hugh Crain coming back.

Updating it further to 2017 or whenever seems even more problematic. How about a period piece set in the early 1960s? Seems superfluous, as noted by the previous poster, but yet...

I wouldn't be surprised if someone does attempt another remake, either as a contemporary story or as a period piece.

I'd like a remake too. I just watched this last night for the first time since 1999 or 2000 when I rented it on vhs (lol). I remember watching it at a sleepover and everyone being scared (we were all 9/10!) and watching last night the only parts I remembered were: Luke getting his head knocked off and Nell and Theo dancing in the music box room when they first arrive. But yeah, I was really disappointed in this film. It was not scary and didn't built tension. I like the concept but it was executed poorly.

Yep. Its lame ass , repetitive & eventually, boring.
