The Changeling - as good a haunted house movie as you will see.

reply

i agree - house on haunted hill is great, especially famke janssen... =)

reply

A bit campy, but I enjoyed the remake of Thirteen Ghosts (the one with Tony Shaloub.)

Im not sure it quaifies as a haunted house flick, though.

And Below, though not a Haunted House exaclty, does convey the FEEL of a Haunted House movie. (Claustrophobic and such).

Yes. The ORIGINAL Haunting is one of the best haunted house films ever made.

reply

Amen. Though I would go further and say it is THE best haunted house film ever made.

reply

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Not a real haunted house movie but a haunted hotel movie instead.

reply

Poltergeist, one of my favorites.

LOL, I think most of us can agree that The Haunting was a flawed movie (that doesn't mean that it wasn't good)... but The House On Haunted Hill? PLEASE!! I hope you are talking about the original one, with Vincent Price. The one with Geoffrey Rush was AWFUL!!

reply

1. The Woman in Black. In my opinion, the best Haunted House movie ever (if you can track it down) plus probably the scariest movie I've seen and im a horror junkie so i know what im talking about (but yeah, its up to opinion).
2. House on Haunted Hill (Both versions good in my opinion)
3. Original 'The Haunting'.
4. 'The Legend of Hell House'
5. 'The Changeling'

Any others added would be cool, I want to see as many as possible because they rock. except this movie, this movie sucked bad.

What about the series Rose Red (Stephen King).

reply

^ that was good. I need to check out more haunted house films.

See now in my opinion, they are just too low budget for my liking. It's the same story for all of his novels, I mean, they are amazing stories but they always seem to get made into cheap, low budget nonsense. The best Stephen King adaptation (that wasn't a major blockbuster btw) has got to be the new Salems Lot with Rob Lowe. Definitely gotta love that :D

"I am Switzerland!" - Bella I may not like you much, but you can be pretty funny sometimes!

"The Others," with Nicole Kidman. From 2001. There's a reason this movie is given a 7.7 in IMDB: it is genuinely creepy. As with the original "The Haunting" and other classic ghost stories, much of the suspense is psychological in nature...it's what we DON'T see that can scare us the most.

I was just talking about this the other day... :)

So just copying-N-pasting... (these are not the gory type)...

I'd definitely suggest The Others too... Just a good ole fashioned creepy house ghost story. :)

Plot: A woman who lives in a darkened old house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that her family home is haunted.

I saw a movie a LONG time ago... and have never seen it since...but it left such an impression on me...I was a kid... and I SO wish TCM...or Some place...would show it again. Who knows ...maybe it wasn't as creepy as I remember...(but I think it WAS)...

It's..."The Shuttered Room"... does anyone know of this film. A british horror film...

Looking on it's imdb page...this is what someone said...

A couple inherits an old house in New England that harbors a dark and terrifying secret!

Creepy! This is an unfairly unappreciated and extremely effective Gothic horror flick from the late 60's. It is also one of the better attempts to bring literary mastermind H.P. Lovecraft to the screen. The acting is magnificent! Carol Lynley and Gig Young are in top form as the bewildered young couple whose arrival in the small, tranquil village seems to trigger off a series of bizarre and ultimately deadly occurrences. Veteran character actress Flora Robson is genuinely affecting as the strange old lady who seems to know a great deal more than she's telling about the secret that's hidden away in THE SHUTTERED ROOM. Oliver Reed is appropriately menacing as a young roughneck. This one is a little tough to find these days. It's not readily available in video stores, and though once popular on late night television, they rarely run it on TV. But should you be so fortunate to come across it, don't pass it up!

Other haunted house...ghost or just creepy stories are...

There's a couple Bette Davis movies that were creepy... in big ole houses... (Probably even more...but I was thinkin')...

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte... (at least it scared me when I was little... even though they didn't really show any "gore")...

Plot: Charlotte Hollis, an aging recluse deluded into a state of dementia by horrible memories and hallucinations, lives in a secluded house, forever plagued by a horrifying family secret.

And...The Watcher in the Woods...

Plot: When a family moves to a country home, the young girls experience strange happenings that have a link to an occult event years past.

Another good ghost story is...Lady in White...

Plot: The year is 1962. The place is Willowpoint Falls. Nobody talks about what happened in the school cloakroom 10 years ago. Now, in the dead of night, Frankie Scarlatti is going to find out why.

Locked in a school closet during Halloween 1962, young Frank witnesses the ghost of a young girl and the man who murdered her years ago.

The Skeleton Key... starring Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands and John Hurt was a really good ghost story... that took place in a creepy ole house... (and not gory)...I liked it... :)

Plot: A hospice nurse working at a spooky New Orleans plantation home finds herself entangled in a mystery involving the house's dark past.

What Lies Beneath ...starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer...is a good, creepy, thriller...

Looking at the imdb page...here's a review...

One creepy movie!

I found this to be a very creepy & awesome movie. Its odd to see Ford in a role like this, since he has never been in a "horror" movie before, but he does a good job as usual. Pfeiffer does an even better performance. She sees a ghost & searches for the truth. This is a creepy horror thriller with several twists & several "jump" scenes, I definitely recommend it, this movie is definitely going into my dvd collection.

Here's another one... I thought was interesting..."The Return" ... with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sam Shepard...

Another review...

very intelligent well written supernatural thriller...

I really liked it and that's saying a lot because I generally don't like Sarah Michelle Gellar, but she does an excellent job in this film. I think it's just a good movie all around.

Lots of suspense in this movie, but no gore, which is very refreshing. And there were some genuinely creepy moments in the movie and I liked that. I also liked the look of the movie... dark and atmospheric with muted colors. I found that very effective. The story itself is unique and is not predictable. It kept me in suspense, not knowing what might happen next. I thought I had it figured out a few times, only to find out I was wrong. In my mind...any movie that can keep you guessing to the end is doing something right. Additionally it gets tied up really nicely at the end.

This is one of the better suspense/thriller movies I have seen in a long time. I had low expectation going into this movie, and those expectation were shattered. If you're looking for a suspense movie with clever writing and good characters, check this movie out.

The Messengers... another creepy house story...directed by the Pang Brothers (who made the original The Eye - "Gin gwai")... starring Dylan McDermott, John Corbett and Penelope Ann Miller was decent... (although had a few things that didn't add up)... but still worth a look. I don't really remember any gore.

Plot: An ominous darkness invades a seemingly serene sunflower farm in North Dakota, and the Solomon family is torn apart by suspicion, mayhem and murder.

And talking about haunted houses..."Rose Red"...a stephen king mini series...basically based on the Winchester House in california...(which is an Amazing haunted house with a Great story!). Rose Red isn't particularly scary...but it entertaining. And Stephen King has a cameo as the pizza delivery man. :)

Just to mention..."Cry Wolf"... this IS a slasher movie...(a wee bit gory)... but it IS intriguing. Takes place at a university...

Quoting...

Twists make the movie particularly intriguing...

Cry wolf is without a doubt one of the best slasher movies I've ever seen, and I've seen hundreds of them. Director jeff wadlow claimed he researched the horror genre intently before making this movie, and it really shows. Cry Wolf is one of the smartest, scariest, and sexiest slashers ever created. With a diverse, likable cast...mostly talented unknowns, but a few familiar faces too (like Jared Padalecki...from the CW's "Supernatural", Jon Bon Jovi, Gary Cole).

At first Cry Wolf seems like it's going to be a traditional, straight-forward slasher movie, but soon you begin to realize that there are layers within layers, and the result is a movie that's increasingly suspenseful and intriguing from beginning to end. It would be highly unfair to give away the plot. It's appropriate only to say that I was surprised by the ending. The movie cleverly weaves in current technologies (especially instant messaging) in a way that heightens the suspense and is sure to enhance its appeal to young audiences. Great production values, cinematography and editing -- all elements contribute to a movie that's one of the best of its genre.

Harrison Ford DID do a horror film prior to "What Lies Beneath"!

The Possessed (1977 TV movie)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076563/

From IMDb:

A former priest, now an exorcist, battles the satanic forces that are threatening the students at a girls school.

Ford plays a teacher at the school.
