I was watching this in English class, and I really liked it…except that Ophelia was so boring…
I love her character in the play, she's wistful and crazy and whiny and full of emotion. Julia Stiles didn't even act, she just stood there and kind of swayed.
I imagine that Ophelia must be a hard character to play, but all she did was stand there.

Ophelia always is. I've never seen a lively Ophelia. Honest to God, maybe it's just the character. Maybe she's meant to be little more than an object. That's one character I've never been able to understand.

Gotta agree with bron-tay. I haven't even seen this film (was just browsing the boards because a modern adaptation intrigued me) but, honestly, I have never found Ophelia interesting. Even Winslet couldn't save the character in Branagh's Hamlet because there's not much to save. She's probably one of Shakespeare's weakest characters in that she's really only there as a plot device, if not prop.

Don't blame Stiles - the director decides this. Stiles is a great a grass. Actually, one of the finest actresses I know. She's definitely not dull.
