Why did she stay awake?

I saw this movie twice and still don't know why she didn't go unconcious when the tragedy happened, or why the others stayed out.I did like the movie though. It is good if you don't think too much.

Within the first 10-15 minutes of the movie, she gets oxygen from an oxygen mask by playing around with the first aid kit.

Thanks James, I realised that the third time I saw it, now answer this...why didn't they simply send a pilot over the time the rescuer came over. See what happens when you pay too much attention to a movie, you (I) ask too many questions. Better to just sit back and enjoy a movie, right?

I shudder at defending this barely marginal film, but since you have seen it 3 times you'll remember that they feared that the autopilot may not disengage (which of course is ridiculous) preventing manual control of the crippled aircraft.

The apparent plan was to get each of the passengers off using a rescue crewman, THEN transfer an experienced pilot over to the stricken aircraft to determine if manual control could be regained. The rescue aircraft could detach the tether and land safely with Nicole and the injured passengers. Meanwhile, the transfer pilot could attempt to disable the autopilot and manually land the damaged aircraft, or at least attempt to program the malfunctioning autopilot to fly to an unpopulated area. If unable to land manually, the transfer pilot would parachute to safety as a contingency, just as the mid-air rescue crewman ultimately did.
