The stock-footage system really weakens this series

I realize that the stock-footage was necessary, for cost-cutting, but honestly, it makes this series much weaker than it could have been.

Look at the quality of the opening sequence. If the entire show could have had that kind of quality of animation, then it would have been far superior. Perhaps that would have made it too costly to create, and if so, that's a shame. But even if one tries to approach this series with a lot of generosity (and I have), the weakness of the animation severely detracts from one's enjoyment.

I've recently been on an "'80s animation" kick, and even comparing Blackstar to the work of the '80s Marvel outfit (the one that did Inhumanoids and Jem and the Holograms and such), it's remarkable how much better the Marvel quality is to this, as a whole.

This was typical of Filmation. From what I can tell, Filmation rotoscoped different movements such as running, and reused them. They reused these in several of their shows, including Tarzan, Zorro, the Lone Ranger, Flash Gordon, and Blackstar. If I'm not mistaken, this reused figure animation goes back to their animated Star Trek series. They even reuse musical cues in the shows.

^YES!!

Thats the one thing that brought the quality of Filmation shows to a screeching halt was their overuse of stock footage. Hanna Barbera had this problem as well but the technique wasnt nearly used as much as Filmation did. God forbid it was a show that had a music band because all their song sequences would be recycled from the Archie Show.
