Bozz speaking truth

My favorite part of the film is the ending, when Bozz responds to Pax's "write me when you're over there" with the truth: nah, this is it, man . . .

After what they've shared, and what he's done for Pax, it's quintessentially Bozz to tell the painful truth - he won't be pursuing the friendship after this, he's letting it die it's natural death (or unnatural death if he really did die in 'Nam). To me, the affection between them at the end, Pax's tears, Bozz's truth-speak, and him ripping up Pax's journal are inextricably tied together in a deft summing up of Bozz's character, their friendship, and the entire film. The uncertainty in the final voiceover is perfect - just when I want to know more about Bozz, I'm left to my own guesses about him and his fate.

OK, rambled a bit here, but wanted it out there - didn't see a comment on Bozz's last lines re: their 'Army Buddy sh**' anywhere else, so what do you folks think?

". . . the single moment of artless, charmed happiness. . ."

As a former soldier, I can relate to this. We made many friends and 'army buddies', we swore to keep in touch, but the reality is that life goes on, and I'm sure guys in actual wars probably wanted to forget about those times.

I thought Bozz was saying it was it for himself
