Suzuki + Kurosawa

Hey,

I'm new to Japanese cinema and have just started watching some films. I have watched 3 films from Suzuki (which I really really like) and 3 from Kurosawa (which are true classics). I was wondering if the two characters ShintarĂ´ Suzuki and Tadasuke Kurosawa are homages to the two directors. I have no idea if it's a common name in the country or not, but I was just wondering.\

Pat.

That's what I thought too. I saw the trailers for this movie and Pistol Opera at the same time, so I was thinking of that when I watched this.

Probably Shintaro Katsu the famous actor who portrayes Zatoichi... and of course Akira Kurosawa.

reply

Of course they are... also do not forget Mizoguchi. It doesn't really matter whether they are "common names" in Japan: if you use these three names together in a MOVIE, it cannot be a coincidence. What got me thinking was whether these three characters, their fates, behaviour etc. carry any deliberate significance with the original directors. Stopping here not to reveal any plot lines, but seems like an interesting thing to look at.

Yeah, that's a good point. If they were loosely based on the famous directors, than I'd say the SF characters are the slapstick take on the directors. Sort of what they'd be like if they were in that fictitious comical world =)

Suzuki is the second most common name in Japan.

However, I still think it was deliberate that the two friends were called by those two names.

I think the simpleton that followed Kazamatsuri around was a reference to Korusawa's Dodesukaden.
